This here CMC injury, it’s a real pain in the… well, in the thumb! You know, that joint where your thumb meets your hand? That’s the CMC joint. My fingers ain’t what they used to be. Hurts somethin’ fierce sometimes, especially when I try to open a jar or grip somethin’ tight.

Now, I heard some folks talkin’ ’bout this CMC joint injury. Seems like it’s common when you get a little older. Like me, you see. Everything starts to wear out, like an old tractor left out in the rain. This wearing out, they call it thumb osteoarthritis, I reckon. And it sure does make the thumb hurt, like a toothache in your hand.
It don’t matter if it’s your right thumb or your left thumb, when that thumb pain starts, it’s a real bother. Can’t hardly do nothin’ without that thumb. Like pickin’ up a needle to sew a button, or even holdin’ a spoon proper.
- This thumb pain, it’s a sign of that thumb osteoarthritis.
- Hurts like the dickens, I tell ya!
- Hard to do things when your thumb is actin’ up.
They say there’s ways to help with this CMC injury. First, they tell ya to wear a brace. A soft one, mind you, not like them hard casts they put on a broken bone. Just somethin’ to give that thumb a little support. I tried it, not sure how much it helps. They also say, that it can keep pain at bay. I just want the pain to go away!
If that brace don’t do the trick, they got these shots they can give ya. Right at the base of your palm, where it meets your thumb. Supposed to help with the pain. I ain’t too keen on needles, but I’d try anything to get rid of this ache. I heard some folks say it works wonders. I don’t know what is in those shots. They don’t tell an old lady like me.
And if those shots don’t work, well, then they got other things they can do. I don’t know all the details. But I heard them talkin’ about exercise and therapy. Some type of exercise may help with this CMC joint pain. Keep the joint movin’, I guess. Maybe those exercises are a good way to help reduce the pain. I need to ask the doctor again next time I see him.

- Brace for your thumb.
- Shots in your hand.
- Exercise and therapy.
They say that exercise can help with the function of your thumb. Whatever that means. I just want to be able to use my thumb again without it hurtin’ all the time. It’s hard to do anything when your hand is achin’.
I remember when I was younger, I could work all day in the garden, and my hands wouldn’t bother me one bit. Now, just tryin’ to open a pickle jar is a chore. This CMC injury is a real nuisance. Makes you feel old, it does. They say if you keep the stress off that joint it can help.
It is important to find a treatment if your thumb hurts, they said. I do not want to lose the function of my thumb! There are self-treatment methods they say. I don’t know about those. Maybe I should try.
This whole thumb arthritis thing is a pain in the neck. Or rather, a pain in the thumb. But I guess that’s just part of gettin’ older. Everything starts to wear out eventually. Even the strongest of bodies start to have problems.
But I ain’t givin’ up. I’m gonna keep tryin’ different things until I find somethin’ that helps. I gotta keep these hands workin’. There’s still quilts to be made and gardens to be tended. And I ain’t gonna let a little CMC joint pain stop me. I am gonna try some exercises for sure. Maybe that will make it feel better. If that doesn’t work, I will try the brace thing again. I hope it helps this time.

If you’re havin’ trouble with your thumb, don’t ignore it. Go see a doctor and find out what’s goin’ on. There might be somethin’ they can do to help. Don’t let it get worse like I did. Trust me, you don’t want to deal with this any longer than you have to. Take care of yourself, and don’t wait until it is too late. It is important to take care of yourself. I wish I knew this earlier.
