Okay, so today I decided to get my head around the rugby points system. It always seemed a bit confusing to me, so I figured I’d finally sort it out.

Getting Started
First, I grabbed my notebook and pen – yeah, I’m old school like that. I like actually writing things down. Then, I opened up my browser and started searching. You know, the usual “rugby points system explained” kind of thing.
Diving In
I found a bunch of articles and started reading. The basic stuff was pretty straightforward:
- Try: 5 points. This is when a player grounds the ball in the opponent’s in-goal area. Makes sense.
- Conversion: 2 points. This is the kick after a try. Gotta get it between the posts and over the crossbar.
- Penalty Kick: 3 points. Awarded for certain infringements by the other team.
- Drop Goal: 3 points. When a player kicks the ball through the posts during open play. Pretty cool, actually.
Digging Deeper
Okay, I thought, that’s the easy part. But I wanted to make sure I really understood it. So I kept reading. Some articles talked about bonus points, which I hadn’t really considered before.
Turns out, in some competitions, teams can get extra points:
- Losing Bonus Point. You can get a bonus point in some tournaments for losing a game by 7 points or less.
- Try Bonus Point. In some tournaments, you get a bonus point for scoring 4 or more tries in a match.
Putting it Together
I spent a good hour going through different explanations and examples. I even watched a couple of short videos to see the scoring in action. After a while, it started to click. I scribbled down some notes and example scenarios in my notebook, just to test myself.

I feel I really understand all of it now. It takes sometime for me to go through all of the materials and try to fully understand it. I also realize that different tournaments have different rules, it’s better to check it before the game!
Anyway, that was my little learning adventure for today. Hope this was helpful for someone else out there who’s been scratching their head about rugby scoring!
