Okay, so I decided to hit up McGregor for a little getaway. I’d heard it was a charming place, and boy, were those rumors right! I’m going to walk you through what I did, step by step, so you can get a feel for the vibe.

First Things First: Getting There
I drove down, which I highly recommend. The scenery along the way is just beautiful. Rolling hills, vineyards, the whole nine yards. It’s a pretty easy drive, and it really sets the mood for a relaxing time.
Settling In and Finding a Place to Crash
I booked a cute little cottage beforehand. There are tons of charming B&Bs and guesthouses in McGregor, so you have lots of options. I wanted something cozy and with character, and my place totally delivered. Unpacked, settled in, and then it was time to explore.
Exploring the Town
- Strolling: Seriously, just walk around. The town is small, and that’s part of its charm. I just wandered through the streets, taking in the whitewashed houses and the pretty gardens.
- Popping into shops: There are some lovely little art galleries and craft shops. I browsed, chatted with the owners, and even picked up a small painting as a souvenir.
- Grab a bite:I found a quaint little cafe and sat down for lunch. Nothing fancy, just good, honest food. I’m a sucker for a good homemade pie, and they had one!
Wine time!
It will be a pity if you visit Mcgregor but without tasting the wine. I chose a small and friendly wine estate and joined their wine tasting tour. I am not an expert, but I enjoyed it.
Getting Out into Nature
After all that relaxing town stuff, I was ready for some nature.

- Hiking: There are some great trails around McGregor. I picked an easy one, since I’m not exactly a pro hiker, and headed out. The views were incredible. I spent a couple of hours just soaking it all in.
- Birdwatching: Brought my binoculars, which was a good call. I spotted a few interesting birds, even though I’m no expert. Just being out there, listening to the birdsong, was fantastic.
Dinner and a Show (Sort Of)
For dinner, I tried a slightly fancier restaurant. The food was delicious – locally sourced ingredients, cooked with care. Afterward, I wandered back to my cottage. There wasn’t a “show,” but sitting on the porch, looking at the stars, felt pretty magical.
Wrapping Up
My trip to McGregor was all about slowing down and appreciating the simple things. I explored, ate, hiked, and just generally soaked up the atmosphere. It’s the perfect place to recharge your batteries. If you’re looking for a peaceful getaway, I highly recommend giving McGregor a try. You won’t regret it!
