Right, so I wanted to talk about this thing I’ve been doing lately, kind of my own little “horse ranger” project, you could call it. It’s not official or anything, just something I sort of fell into.

It started a few months back. I was feeling pretty stuck, you know? Same routine day in, day out. Needed something different. I remembered this place, a small horse sanctuary kinda place, not far from here. Always drove past it. One day, I just pulled in. Asked if they needed a hand. Turns out, they always need a hand.

Getting Started – The Real Work

So, I started going there on weekends. Let me tell you, it wasn’t glamorous. Forget majestic rides into the sunset. My first jobs were:

  • Mucking out stalls. Lots of it.
  • Hauling hay bales. Heavier than they look.
  • Filling water troughs.
  • Just general cleaning up.

Honestly, it was hard physical work. Came home knackered every time. But there was something… straightforward about it. You did the job, you saw the result. Clean stall, fed horses. Simple.

Meeting ‘The One’

After a while, they let me do more with the horses themselves. Grooming, leading them out to the paddock. There was this one old fella, Chester. Bit grumpy, didn’t trust people much. Most volunteers kinda avoided him. But I dunno, I felt a bit sorry for him. So, I started spending extra time just standing near his stall, talking nonsense to him. Didn’t push it.

Slowly, very slowly, he started to come around. Would let me brush him without pinning his ears back. Started nudging my pockets for treats, which I wasn’t supposed to give him, but maybe I did sometimes. Small victories, right?

That’s where the “ranger” bit comes in, for me anyway. It felt like I was looking out for him, checking on him, making sure he was okay. Not just him, but keeping an eye on the fences, the gates, the general state of things in that little corner of the place. It became my patch.

Reminds Me Of…

It’s funny, this whole thing kinda reminds me of this awful project I worked on years ago. Software thing. Total mess. No clear direction, management changing their minds every five minutes, nobody talking to each other. Remember spending weeks fixing bugs caused by someone else’s sloppy work, just trying to keep the damn thing from falling apart completely. Felt like I was the only one plugging the leaks in a sinking ship.

Working with Chester, and just doing the basic graft at the sanctuary, it’s got that same feeling sometimes. You’re dealing with tricky situations, things don’t always go smoothly, and you just have to patiently chip away at it. Fix the fence, calm the horse, clean the stall. You don’t always get a big reward, but you keep things going. It’s honest work, I guess.

Where I’m At Now

So yeah, that’s my horse ranger gig. Still doing it. Still knackered afterwards. Chester still has his grumpy days. But now he properly looks for me when I arrive, even whinnies sometimes. That feels pretty good.

It’s not changing the world, but it changed my world a bit. Got me out of that rut. It’s just about showing up, doing the work, and looking after your little patch. Simple as that, really.
