Horse Trailer Crash: Emergency Preparedness and What to Do in an Accident!

Okay, so, let me tell you about this whole ordeal I went through with my horse trailer. It was a real mess, and honestly, I learned a ton from it. I figured I’d share my experience here, might help someone else out, you know?

Horse Trailer Crash: Emergency Preparedness and What to Do in an Accident!

It all started when I decided to take my horse, Buster, to this big show a few states over. I’ve had Buster for years, and we’ve been to our fair share of events, but this one was a big deal. So, I hooked up my old trailer – the one I’ve had for ages – and loaded Buster in. He’s usually pretty good about trailering, but I could tell he was a bit antsy this time. Probably sensed my own nervousness, to be honest.

We hit the road early in the morning. Everything was going smoothly, or so I thought. I was a couple of hours into the drive, cruising down the highway, when suddenly I heard this loud bang. The whole truck started shaking like crazy, and I immediately knew something was very wrong. I pulled over as fast as I could, my heart pounding in my chest.

Turns out, one of the trailer tires had completely blown out. And it wasn’t just a flat – the whole thing had shredded. I was lucky I didn’t lose control of the truck, honestly. I got out to check on Buster, and thankfully, he seemed okay, just a bit shaken up. But the trailer? It was a mess. The wheel well was all banged up, and the axle looked pretty bad too.

I’m no mechanic, but I know the basics. Changing a tire, sure, I could do that. But this? This was way beyond my skillset. I called roadside assistance, and while I was waiting, I did what I could to keep Buster calm. I had some water in the truck, so I gave him some of that, and just talked to him in a soothing voice. That horse is my buddy, you know? I felt terrible that he had to go through this.

Anyway, roadside assistance finally showed up, and they confirmed what I already knew – the trailer was not in any shape to continue the journey. They helped me unload Buster, which was another ordeal in itself since he was understandably freaked out by the whole situation. We were in the middle of nowhere, so I had to call a friend who lived a few hours away to come and get us. Luckily this friend also have a horse trailer.

  • First, I always check the tires before heading out. And I mean really check them – look for any signs of wear and tear, make sure the pressure is right.
  • Second, regular trailer maintenance. This one’s a biggie. I used to be pretty lax about it, but not anymore.
  • Third, always have an emergency kit in the truck. I’m talking basic stuff like water, a first aid kit, a knife for cutting ropes, and some tools. You never know what you might need.
  • Fourth, you should know how to handle your horse in an emergency. Like, they need to be able to load and unload calmly, even if they’re stressed out.

It was a long and stressful day, but we eventually made it to my friend’s place. Buster stayed there for a few days while I dealt with the trailer. I ended up having to get a new axle and a whole new set of tires. It was a hefty bill, but honestly, I was just grateful that Buster and I were safe.

So, yeah, that’s my story about the horse trailer crash. It was a real wake-up call for me. I learned the hard way that you can never be too prepared when you’re hauling horses. Now every time before I load my horse, I always keep safety measures in mind. Also, I learned how to act around horses to remain safe from this accident. It’s not just about being a good rider – it’s about being responsible and knowing how to handle unexpected situations.

I hope my little adventure here can be a lesson to other horse owners out there. Stay safe, folks!
