Alright, so today I wanted to figure out the Manchester United starting lineup for their next match. It’s something I do pretty much every match day, kind of a ritual, you know?

First thing I usually do is just grab my phone or sit down at the computer. My go-to starting point used to be just searching broadly online, but that throws up so much guesswork, especially early on. Loads of fan forums, news sites predicting stuff – it’s mostly noise.
So, I skipped that step today. Learned my lesson over the years. I went straight to checking a couple of the big sports news apps I have installed. I opened one, navigated through the football section, found the upcoming matches, and tapped on the United game. Sometimes they get the lineup posted there pretty quickly, maybe an hour before kickoff, sourced from official announcements.
Checked the first app. Nope, nothing solid yet. Just the usual match preview stuff, predicted lineups. Predicted lineups are okay for a bit of fun, but not what I needed. I wanted the real deal.
Then I tried my other main sports app. Same story. Still too early, I guess. You gotta time it right, usually around that one-hour-before-kickoff mark is when the official teamsheets drop.
Okay, plan C. I jumped onto social media. Fired up Twitter, or X, whatever it’s called now. I searched for the official Man Utd account first. Scrolled through their feed. Sometimes they post it right there with a nice graphic. Not yet today.

Then I searched using hashtags, like #MUN[Opponent] or just #MUFC lineup. This is where you see everything – ITK accounts (In The Know, supposedly), journalists tweeting, fans arguing. It’s a bit chaotic.
- I saw a few tweets claiming to have the lineup.
- Checked who was tweeting it – sometimes you recognise reliable journalists.
- Compared a couple of the ‘leaked’ lineups – often they contradict each other!
It’s useful to see the buzz, but you still need confirmation.
Finding the Official Source
By this point, it was getting closer to that magic hour mark. So, I decided to go directly to the source. I opened the official Manchester United app on my phone. This is usually the most reliable place, even if it’s not always the very fastest.
I tapped around in the app, went to the ‘Match Centre’ or ‘Live Match’ section. They usually have a dedicated tab or area for the lineup once it’s announced.
And there it was! Finally, the official team sheet graphic popped up. Showed the starting XI, the substitutes. I quickly scanned the names. Okay, interesting choice at right-back, and looks like the formation is what I expected.

So, yeah, that’s the process. Took a bit of hopping around today:
- Checked main sports apps (too early).
- Scrolled through social media (lots of noise, some early hints).
- Landed on the official club app for the confirmed list.
It’s not complicated, just requires a bit of patience sometimes, knowing where and when to look. Now I know who’s starting, feel a bit more prepared for watching the game. Simple stuff, but part of the matchday routine for me.
