Double Rear Wing F1: Whats It All About and Is It Worth?

Hey guys, welcome back to my blog. Today I want to talk about something I tried out recently, something a bit wild, you know? I’m talking about putting a double rear wing on an F1 car. Yeah, you heard that right, a double rear wing. I know it sounds crazy, but I saw it in some old 1994 F1 races and was like, “Why not give it a shot?”

So, first things first, I needed to get my hands on the parts. I started by searching online and found some suppliers. And I found the regular F1 rear wing, and then I thought, “How am I gonna make this a double?” I did some digging around, and it turns out I needed to find another wing that would fit alongside the first one. I ended up getting a second wing from a different supplier, one that was a bit smaller than the main one.

Next up was figuring out how to actually put this thing together. I got my tools out, cleared some space in my garage, and got to work. It wasn’t easy, I’ll tell you that. I had to modify the mounting brackets to hold both wings. I used a wrench to loosen some bolts and spent a good few hours just trying to align everything properly. There was a lot of trial and error, let me tell you. I’d put it on, take it off, adjust, put it back on… it was a whole thing.

Once I finally had both wings mounted, I needed to test it out. I took the car out to a local track that I sometimes rent out for these kinds of experiments. At first, I was just cruising around, getting a feel for it. It definitely felt different, that’s for sure. The car was sticking to the track more, especially in the corners.

  • First test lap: A bit slow, getting used to the feel.
  • Second test lap: Pushed it a bit more, noticed improved grip in corners.
  • Third test lap: Went full throttle on the straight, felt like the car weighed a ton!

But here’s where it gets interesting. As I started pushing the car harder, especially on the straights, I noticed something cool. The car felt like it had the weight of an elephant at high speed! I did some reading online after the test. I realized this happens around 150km/h. Apparently, at that speed, the car generates as much downforce as its own weight. So yeah, it felt super heavy, but in a good way. It was like the car was glued to the track.

Now, I know this isn’t exactly street legal, and it’s probably not something you’d want to do to your everyday car. But for an F1 car, on a track, it was a pretty awesome experience. I learned a lot about aerodynamics and how wings work. It was interesting to read that the slot between the double wings prevents stalling. Apparently, air shoots through the gap at great speed, keeping the air attached to the upper wing. I wouldn’t have thought of that.

Final Thoughts

Would I do it again? Maybe. It was a lot of work, but it was also a lot of fun. And hey, I learned something new, which is always a good thing. It’s like, I saw this thing in old races, thought it was cool, and decided to try it myself. And you know what? It worked! Well, sort of. It’s not like I’m gonna be racing in F1 anytime soon, but it was a cool project.

So, that’s my story about putting a double rear wing on an F1 car. Hope you guys found it interesting. Let me know in the comments if you’ve ever tried anything like this, or if you have any questions. Catch you in the next one!
