Alright, let’s talk about my recent deep dive into the world of the CB550Four. I’ve always been a fan of vintage bikes, and the CB550Four has that classic 70’s vibe that I just love. So, I finally got my hands on one – a bit of a fixer-upper, but that’s half the fun, right?
First thing I did was just give it a good look over. I mean, really get in there and see what I was dealing with. The previous owner had let it sit for a while, so there was some rust, some grime, and a few questionable wiring choices. Nothing too scary, though.
Getting My Hands Dirty
I started with the basics: cleaning the carbs. Those things were gunked up! I took them apart, soaked them in cleaner, and used some compressed air to blow out all the little passages. It’s kinda therapeutic, in a weird way.
Next, I tackled the fuel tank. There was some rust inside, so I used a rust remover solution and let it sit for a day. Then, I rinsed it out really well and made sure it was completely dry before putting it back on the bike.
- Checked the spark plugs: They were pretty fouled, so I replaced them with new ones.
- Changed the oil and filter: Gotta have fresh fluids!
- Inspected the brakes: The pads were worn, so I replaced those too. Safety first!
Then came the fun part – trying to start it up! I put in some fresh gas, hooked up a new battery, and held my breath. It took a few tries, but eventually, it sputtered to life! Man, that feeling when you hear that engine roar for the first time… priceless.
It still need some fine tune with idle, I will deal with them these days.

It wasn’t perfect, of course. The idle was a bit rough, and there were a few oil leaks. But it was running! I spent the next few days tinkering with it, adjusting the carbs, tightening bolts, and just generally getting it dialed in.
Now, it’s running pretty sweet. I’ve taken it for a few short rides, and it’s a blast. It’s got that classic Honda sound, and it just feels so good to be cruising around on a bike that I brought back to life. There’s still some cosmetic work to do, but for now, I’m just enjoying the ride.
This whole CB550Four project has been a great reminder of why I love working on bikes. It’s challenging, rewarding, and you end up with something unique that you can be proud of. If you’re thinking about getting into vintage bikes, I say go for it! Just be prepared to get your hands dirty and learn a lot along the way.
