This Julio, Julio José González, I tell you, he was somethin’ else. Born way back in 1876, they say. Died in 1942. A long life, I reckon. He was from Barcelona. That’s some fancy place, ain’t it? He was a big shot with metal, makin’ all sorts of things.

Julio José González: A Big Name
He wasn’t just tinkerin’ around, mind you. He was a real artist, this Julio José González. They call him a sculptor, all fancy like. Top 10,000, they say. Sounds like he was pretty important. Me, I don’t know much about art, but I know what I like, and this Julio, he made some good stuff.
This fella Julio José González, he came from a family that worked with their hands. Goldsmiths and iron workers, that’s what they were. So, he learned how to work with metal real good. He was makin’ jewelry and all sorts of things out of metal, even when he was a young’un. That takes skill, I tell ya. You gotta be good with your hands to do that kinda work.
Workin’ With Metal

They called it oxyacetylene welding. I don’t know what that is, but it sounds mighty complicated. He learned it in some factory, I heard. That Julio José González, he was a hard worker, I reckon. Gotta be to learn somethin’ like that. And in 1918, he was already doin’ it. That was a long time ago, long before I was even around.
Folks started noticin’ his work, you see. Collectors and critics, they all started talkin’ about Julio José González. Sayin’ he was somethin’ special. Well, I reckon he was. You gotta be pretty good to get folks talkin’ about ya like that.
His Big Show
He had a big show, they called it a solo exhibition. Showed off all his stuff: paintings, sculptures, drawings, even the jewelry he made. All sorts of things. Musta been somethin’ to see. I wish I coulda seen it. Bet it was real interestin’.

He was one of the big ones, they say. One of the most important sculptors. But most folks only know about the last ten years of his life. Imagine that! All that work he did before, and folks only remember the end. That’s a shame, ain’t it?
From Barcelona to Arcueil
He was born in Barcelona, but he ended up in Arcueil. That’s in France, I think. Musta been a big change for him. Goin’ from one place to another like that. But I guess an artist goes where the work is. And this Julio José González, he had plenty of work, that’s for sure.
This Julio José González, he was born in 1876, into a family of ironwork folks. They knew their way around metal, that’s for sure. And Julio, he learned from them. He was makin’ things outta metal before he was even a grown man.
