Okay, so today I decided to mess around with this “Jon McKinney” thing. I’d heard the name buzzing around, some kinda photography guru or something, so I figured, why not see what the hype is about?

Diving In
First, I fired up my trusty old search engine. Just typed in “Jon McKinney” and boom, tons of stuff popped up. Mostly pictures, some websites, the usual. I started clicking around, just to get a feel for his style. It seemed like he’s really into portraits, lots of black and white, very dramatic lighting. Kinda cool, I guess.
Getting My Hands Dirty
Next, I grabbed my camera. Nothing fancy, just my everyday point-and-shoot. I figured I’d try to copy some of the stuff I saw. I roped in my roommate as a model (bribed him with pizza, naturally). We found a spot in the apartment with some decent window light, and I started snapping away.
It was… harder than it looked. I fiddled with the settings, trying to get that high-contrast look. I moved the lamp around, trying to get those dramatic shadows. My roommate was getting pretty impatient, but hey, art takes time, right?
The Results… and Lessons
Honestly, my photos weren’t exactly award-winning. They were kinda blurry, the lighting was off, and my roommate looked more annoyed than artistic. But, I learned a few things.
- Lighting is key. It’s not just about having light, it’s about where it hits and how it shapes the subject.
- Black and white isn’t as easy as it looks. You gotta really think about contrast and tones.
- Patience is a virtue. Especially when you’re working with a reluctant model.
So, yeah, my Jon McKinney experiment was a bit of a flop in terms of the actual photos. I did learn to get out of my comfort zone, and I also learned it’s important to do what the professionals do, practice, practice, and practice more to become better!
