Alright, so I got this idea buzzing in my head a while back, kinda fixated on “The Prince of Egypt 2026”. Don’t ask me why 2026 specifically, it just sounded right, like a target for something new based on that old movie I loved as a kid. It wasn’t like some official thing, just my own little project brewing.

Getting Started – The Spark

First off, I just felt this urge. Watched the original movie again, maybe for the tenth time? And thought, what would this look like now? Not necessarily a remake, but maybe a short scene, reimagined. So, I decided I’d try my hand at animating something, just a tiny piece.

I dug out my old drawing tablet, the one that’s been collecting dust for ages. Had to find the drivers, install them again. That itself took an afternoon, wrestling with compatibility issues. Classic tech fun, right? Then I needed software. Didn’t want to shell out big bucks, so I looked for free options. Found Krita, heard good things. Installed that.

The Actual Work (or Attempt)

Okay, software ready, tablet plugged in. Now what? I figured I’d start simple. Maybe Moses, just a quick character sketch in a more modern style, whatever that meant in my head. Easier said than done.

  • First sketches: Terrible. Looked nothing like I imagined. My drawing skills were rustier than I thought. Spent hours just trying to get proportions right.
  • Trying animation: Watched a bunch of tutorials online. Frame-by-frame stuff. Decided to try making a character blink. Just a blink! Seemed simple enough.
  • The Grind: Man, animation is tedious. Drawing the same thing over and over with tiny changes. My respect for actual animators went through the roof. Getting the timing of that blink to look natural? Way harder than it sounds.
  • Software Woes: Krita is cool, but figuring out the animation timeline, layers, onion skinning… it was a learning curve. Lots of trial and error. Mostly error.

I spent a few weekends on this. Got a very, very rough blinking animation done. It wasn’t smooth, it wasn’t pretty, but it was… something. I also storyboarded a tiny sequence in my notebook – just Moses looking out over the desert. Simple stick figures mostly.

Hitting a Wall and Reflecting

Then, life happened. Work got busy, other things popped up. The tablet started gathering dust again. The “Prince of Egypt 2026” project stalled out. It wasn’t a dramatic failure, more like a slow fade.

What I learned though:

  • Animation is incredibly difficult and time-consuming. Seriously, mad respect.
  • Having an idea is one thing, executing it is another beast entirely.
  • Even free software takes effort to learn properly.
  • Sometimes, just trying something, even if you don’t finish, teaches you a lot.

So, “The Prince of Egypt 2026” sits on my hard drive as a few messy Krita files and some notebook sketches. Maybe I’ll pick it up again, maybe that 2026 date will roll around and I’ll just watch the original movie again. Who knows? But it was an experience, trying to bring a little idea to life, even if it was just a flicker.
