My Crack at the ‘Martin Morning’ Thing
Alright, so I decided to give this ‘martin morning’ routine a shot today. Heard some folks talking about it, sounded like a way to get the day started right, you know? Less chaos, more focus. Seemed simple enough on paper, but doing it is always a different story.

First thing, the alarm goes off. My usual move? Grab the phone, scroll through whatever notifications popped up overnight. Emails, news, social stuff. But the ‘martin’ way says no phone for at least the first hour. Man, that was tough. Felt like an itch I couldn’t scratch. Just left it sitting there on the nightstand, mocking me.
Instead, I dragged myself out of bed, went straight for the coffee maker. Gotta have coffee, that’s non-negotiable. Poured a cup, then actually sat down at my kitchen table. No laptop, no tablet, just the coffee and my thoughts. Felt kinda weird, just sitting there.
The next step was supposed to be some light planning. I grabbed an old notebook and a pen – yeah, actual paper. Tried to jot down the main things I really needed to get done today. Not the whole giant to-do list, just the big rocks. So I listed:
- Finish that report draft.
- Call back the supplier about the delivery mix-up.
- Figure out dinner (always a struggle).
Just writing it down physically felt different. Slower, maybe more deliberate?

After that, I actually went outside for like ten minutes. Didn’t walk far, just stood on the porch, sipped my coffee, watched the street wake up. Usually, I’d be glued to a screen already. This felt… quieter. Less input, you know?
Did it magically solve all my problems? Nah, of course not. By the time I finally picked up my phone an hour later, the world hadn’t ended. My inbox was still full. But I felt a little less frantic jumping into it. Like I’d already set my own course for the day instead of just reacting to whatever popped up first.
So, the ‘martin morning’. It wasn’t revolutionary, but it wasn’t bad either. Just forcing myself to slow down, ditch the tech for a bit, and think clearly before the day runs away with me. I reckon I’ll try it again tomorrow. See if it sticks.
