Okay, so I wanted to share something I did the other weekend. Felt like getting out and swinging the clubs, you know? Ended up heading over to Caguas Real Golf. Haven’t been there in a bit, so thought I’d give it another go.
Getting there was pretty straightforward, just drove over. The morning started kinda cloudy, which honestly, I prefer. Less scorching sun is always a plus for me when I’m walking a course.
Getting Started
Pulled into the parking lot, wasn’t too crowded, which was nice. Grabbed my bag from the trunk – always feels good, that familiar weight. Went into the pro shop to check in. The folks there were friendly enough, got sorted out pretty quickly. Paid my green fee, grabbed a scorecard, and decided against renting a cart. Yeah, I know, walking it can be a workout, especially with the hills there, but I like the exercise. Keeps me honest.
Spent a few minutes on the putting green first. Just wanted to get a feel for the speed. They seemed alright, maybe a touch slow from the morning dew, but rolling true enough. Didn’t bother with the driving range this time, just wanted to get right out there.
Out on the Course
The first tee shot… well, let’s just say it stayed in play! That’s always my main goal, really. Keep it on the short grass, or at least findable. I remember thinking the course looked pretty green, seemed like they were keeping it up well.
What I always notice about Caguas Real are the elevation changes. Seriously, some holes go way up, others drop down quite a bit. Makes you think about club selection, that’s for sure. You can’t just rely on the yardage marker; you gotta factor in that slope.
Played through the front nine at a decent pace. Had a couple of good pars, mixed in with the usual bogeys, and yeah, okay, maybe one or two moments where I was searching for my ball longer than I wanted to. Found some tricky pin positions, tucked away behind bunkers or on little ridges. Made the putting interesting.
Some things I specifically remember:
- Hitting a decent approach shot on one of the par 4s, landed it just short of the green and managed to chip up and make the putt. Always feels good.
- Losing a ball on that one hole with the water hazard… yeah, that happens. Plunk. Oh well.
- Just enjoying the walk, honestly. The views from some of the higher points are quite nice, looking out over the surrounding area.
The back nine felt tougher, maybe I was getting a bit tired from the walking and the hills. The sun started peeking out more too, warming things up. Had to really focus to keep making decent swings. There’s a par 5 on the back, I think it’s 14 or 15, that always gets me. Long, uphill, just a beast. Happy to just walk off with a bogey there.
Wrapping Up
Finished up on 18. Shook hands with the guys I got paired with briefly on the last few holes. Headed back towards the clubhouse. Didn’t break any records, shot about my usual score, maybe a couple strokes higher thanks to those hills and a few errant shots.
Cleaned off my clubs, put the bag back in the car. Felt that good kind of tired, you know? The kind you get after spending a few hours outside doing something you enjoy. Grabbed a cold drink before heading home.
Overall, it was a solid day out. Caguas Real is a challenging course, no doubt, especially if you walk it. But it’s usually in decent shape, and it makes you hit all kinds of different shots. Would I go back? Yeah, definitely. It tests your game, and sometimes, that’s exactly what you need.
