Alright folks, let me tell you about my new obsession: Pickleball!

It all started a few weeks ago. I was looking for a new way to stay active, something that wasn’t too hard on the knees (getting old, you know?), and a friend suggested pickleball. Honestly, the name sounded kinda silly, but I figured, why not?
So, I went out and bought a cheap paddle and some balls. My first time on the court was… interesting. I totally whiffed the ball more times than I care to admit. The serves were going everywhere but where they were supposed to go. I was sweating, frustrated, but also… kinda having fun?
I watched a bunch of YouTube videos. Seriously, a bunch. Learned about the “kitchen” (the non-volley zone), dinking (soft shots near the net), and all the basic rules. Then, I practiced my serves against a wall until my shoulder was screaming.
Next, I started playing with other beginners. We were all terrible, but we were terrible together! We laughed a lot, chased a lot of balls, and slowly, but surely, we started to improve. I started hitting better shots, strategizing a bit more, and even winning a few points!
I even splurged on a decent paddle! It made a huge difference. I could feel the ball better, had more control, and my shots had more power. Suddenly, I wasn’t just hitting the ball; I was placing it.

I now play a few times a week, and I’m hooked. It’s a great workout, it’s social, and it’s surprisingly addictive. It’s not just a sport; it’s a community. People of all ages and skill levels are out there having a blast.
Here’s a quick rundown of how I went from total newbie to… well, slightly less of a newbie:
- Got the gear: Cheap paddle to start, then upgraded when I got serious.
- Watched the pros: YouTube is your friend. Learn the rules and basic techniques.
- Practiced the basics: Serving, dinking, and just hitting the ball consistently.
- Played with others: The best way to learn is by doing! Find some beginner groups and just have fun.
- Don’t be afraid to lose: Everyone starts somewhere. Just focus on improving and having a good time.
Pickleball is life? Maybe not life life, but it’s definitely a big part of mine right now. It’s fun, it’s healthy, and it’s a great way to meet new people. So, if you’re looking for a new hobby, give it a try. You might just get addicted too!
Now, if you’ll excuse me, I’ve got a game to get to! See you on the court!
