My Tussle with the OTA Sports Update
Alright, so the other day, I decided it was time to update my trusty OTA Sports tracker. It’s been pretty solid, mostly, but they pushed out a notification about some new heart rate tracking feature, and I figured, why not? Plus, the battery seemed to be draining a bit faster lately, sometimes updates fix that stuff.

First thing, I made sure the tracker itself had a decent charge. Learned that lesson the hard way with other gadgets – you don’t want it dying mid-update. So, I popped it on its charger for about an hour, got it up to like 90%. Good enough.
Then, I grabbed my phone. Opened up the OTA Sports app. Had to make sure my phone was connected to my home Wi-Fi, the strong one, not the spotty one in the back room. The app usually handles the transfer, but it needs the phone to get the update file first, you know?
Found the ‘Device Settings’ section in the app, and sure enough, there was a big banner saying ‘Firmware Update Available’. Okay, here we go. I tapped on that.
The app told me to keep the tracker close to the phone. Standard procedure. It started downloading the update file. The progress bar on the phone screen moved… slowly. Really slowly. I swear, sometimes these downloads feel like they’re coming over dial-up again. Made myself a coffee while waiting.
Download finished. Phew. Now the transferring part. The app said ‘Transferring update to tracker’. My tracker’s screen lit up with a little arrow icon, showing it was receiving something. The progress bar on the phone started moving again, even slower this time. And the tracker’s screen? Just that static arrow.

- Checked the tracker was still near the phone. Yep.
- Checked my Wi-Fi. Still strong.
- Checked the tracker’s battery level via the app. Still good.
It felt like it took ages. Maybe 20 minutes? The app just said ‘Installing update… Do not move your tracker’. So I just left it sitting there on the table next to my phone. Resisted the urge to pick it up.
Suddenly, the tracker vibrated and rebooted itself. Screen went black, then the OTA Sports logo popped up. My phone app buzzed and showed ‘Update Successful!’. Finally.
I picked up the tracker. Swiped through the menus. Found the new heart rate zone display they mentioned. Looks okay. Seems to work. Haven’t done a workout yet to really test it though. As for the battery drain? Too early to tell. Have to use it for a few days.
Overall, it worked. But man, it wasn’t exactly a quick process. You gotta set aside some time and just be patient. Glad it didn’t brick itself, always a small worry with these OTA things. Now, let’s see if that new feature is actually any good.
