Okay, so, about this “Best Masters Dinners” thing. I got really into it this year, wanted to do something special, you know? I saw that this whole dinner tradition started way back in 1952 with Ben Hogan. The idea was simple: all the Masters champions get together for a meal. Only other guy there is Augusta National’s chairman, invited by the winners. Classy, right?

This year, Jon Rahm was hosting, and that got me thinking. I mean, last year Hideki Matsuyama, the first Japanese winner, put together this amazing Japanese-inspired menu. I remember seeing pictures of assorted sushi and sashimi – looked incredible. Before that, Dustin Johnson had a totally different vibe with lobster fritters and filet mignon. So, it’s clear there’s no set rule, which is cool.

I started digging around for ideas. Found out that Matsuyama’s main course had two options: a grilled ribeye steak with peppers or a cod dish with a sauce made from garlic, chili, and olive oil. Sounded fancy, but I wanted to do something that felt more like me, something everyone would enjoy. I also found some tips about making the cocktails and drinks. They use clear Masters souvenir cups for the beers, which I thought was a nice touch. They’ve got Coors Banquet and some other domestic light beers. I don’t even know where to find these cups.

Then I stumbled upon this old cookbook from some junior league, and it had Augusta National’s own recipe for Southern pound cake. I thought, “Bingo!” Dessert sorted. Everyone loves a good pound cake. I found some other recipes online, too, a bunch of snacks and dips for watching the tournament. There’s this one site that had like 34 recipes inspired by the Masters. It was overwhelming, to be honest, but it gave me a ton of ideas. Callie’s Hot Little Biscuit, whatever that is, kept popping up.

My Plan

So, here’s what I did. First, I decided to skip the fancy stuff. No offense to Matsuyama, but sushi is a bit beyond my skills. I wanted something hearty, something that screams “comfort food.”

  • Drinks: I grabbed a bunch of beers, both domestic and imported, just to keep it simple. Kept them chilled, ready to go. No fancy cocktails for me this time, maybe next year.
  • Appetizers: I made a big batch of pigs in blankets. Easy, classic, and everyone loves them. I also whipped up a simple cheese and cracker platter. Can’t go wrong with that.
  • Main Course: This is where I put in most of my effort. I decided to go with a good old-fashioned barbecue. I grilled some burgers, hot dogs, and chicken. I made sure to have plenty of toppings and sides – lettuce, tomatoes, onions, pickles, different kinds of cheese, you name it. For sides, I made some potato salad, coleslaw, and baked beans. Nothing fancy, but it’s all about the flavor, right?
  • Dessert: Remember that pound cake recipe? Yeah, I made that. And let me tell you, it was a hit. I also got a tub of vanilla ice cream because, well, who doesn’t love ice cream with pound cake?

I set everything up buffet-style, so people could just grab what they wanted. I put on the tournament, and we all just hung out, ate, and watched the game. It wasn’t about being fancy or trying to impress anyone. It was about good food, good company, and enjoying the Masters. And you know what? It turned out to be one of the best nights ever. I felt like I created something simple but great, just like the tradition of this dinner itself. Simple but great, I guess that’s what I was going for. Mission accomplished, I’d say.
