Okay, so I found myself needing to come up with some good names for a girl horse recently. Wasn’t for me, actually, it was for my niece. She just got this lovely little mare, a real beauty, chestnut colored with a white blaze. Anyway, she was stuck for a name, completely blank. Asked me if I could help out, knowing I’ve been around horses a fair bit.

Starting the Hunt
So, I thought, sure, how hard can it be? Well, harder than you think when you actually sit down to do it. First thing I did was just grab a notepad and pen. Old school, I know. I just started jotting down anything that came to mind. Looked out the window, saw a robin, wrote down ‘Robin’. Saw the willow tree, wrote down ‘Willow’. That kinda thing. Got a few down, but nothing felt quite right, you know?
Then I figured, okay, let’s think about the horse herself. She’s got spirit, but gentle too. So I wanted something that wasn’t too frilly, but not too tough either. Something classic maybe? Or maybe something a bit unusual?
Digging Around
I spent a bit of time just thinking about names I’d heard before at stables or in books. Daisy came up, pretty common but nice. Willow was still on the list. Thought about names like Bella, which means beautiful, fitting for her. I even looked through some lists people put together online, just scrolling through pages and pages.
Honestly, it got a bit overwhelming. So many options! Flower names, nature names, strong names, sweet names.
- Flower names: Rose, Lily, Poppy… lots of those.
- Nature stuff: River, Skye, Autumn… felt a bit trendy maybe?
- Classic ones: Annie, Penny, Molly… solid choices.
- Slightly different: Athena, Freya… bit grand perhaps?
I tried saying some names out loud. You gotta do that, see how it sounds when you call it across a field. “Come here, Buttercup!” Sounds okay. “Come here, Seraphina!” Maybe a bit much?

Narrowing It Down
I made a shorter list of the ones I liked the sound of and that seemed to fit her personality, or at least the personality my niece described. I crossed off anything too common, because she wanted something a little special, but also crossed off anything too weird or hard to pronounce.
Some contenders I remember liking were:
- Willow: Still liked this one, gentle sounding.
- Ruby: Because of her reddish coat.
- Piper: Just sounded lively and fun.
- Stella: Means ‘star’, nice ring to it.
- Hazel: Another nature one, but felt a bit warmer.
I sent this shorter list over to my niece. Told her to try them out, see which one felt right when she was actually with the horse. Sometimes the horse kinda picks its own name, you know? You just say one and it clicks.
The Result
In the end, she went with Piper. Said it just seemed to fit her quick steps and curious nature. Felt good to help out, and it was kinda fun going through the process, remembering old horses and thinking about what makes a good name. It’s more personal than you think, naming an animal. Anyway, that was my little adventure in finding girl horse names. Took longer than I expected, but got there in the end!
