My Day at the Golf Got Weird

So, I decided to treat myself. Went down to watch the pros play, you know, the PGA tour thing. Been looking forward to it for weeks. Got myself a decent spot, sun was out, everything felt pretty relaxed. Just wanted a normal day out, watch some amazing golf shots, maybe grab a burger.

Things were going smooth, players were focused, crowd was into it. Then, somewhere around the back nine – I think it was the 17th green, maybe 16th? – things got kinda crazy outta nowhere. Suddenly there’s yelling, and then this bright orange powder just explodes onto the green. Like, poof! All over the place.

My first thought was, honestly, what the hell is happening? Is this part of the show? No, definitely not. You saw these folks running onto the course, wearing shirts with some slogan. “Just Stop Oil,” I think it read. They were shouting stuff, security guys were scrambling, looked like chaos for a minute there.

Here’s what went down from where I stood:

  • Sudden commotion, people gasping.
  • Orange powder cloud settling on the perfect green.
  • Protesters being tackled, pretty quickly actually, by security.
  • Players just standing back, looking confused or annoyed, hard to tell.
  • A big delay while they tried to clean up the mess.

It really killed the mood, you know? Everyone was just standing around awkwardly. People started murmuring, some were mad, some were filming on their phones. The flow of the game was totally gone. Took them ages to get the green playable again, and even then, it felt… off. Like the energy just deflated.

Look, I get it. People are passionate about causes. Climate change, oil, all that stuff – it’s important, sure. But doing this? At a golf tournament? I just don’t see how ruining a patch of grass and annoying a few thousand people helps anything. Seemed more about getting attention than actually making a point anyone would listen to right then.

They got their minute on the news, I guess. But for me, it just wrecked a perfectly good day out. Spent good money on that ticket, wanted to see some top-level sport. Instead, I got a weird, uncomfortable show and a long delay. Just felt kinda pointless and disruptive. Not sure what they achieved other than making a mess and ticking people off. Anyway, that was my experience with the whole ‘Just Stop Oil PGA’ thing. Bit of a letdown, really.
