Okay, so, I finally got my hands on a Honda Spree. I’ve always thought these little scooters were neat, and I’ve been wanting to tinker with one for ages. It all started when I saw one parked outside a local coffee shop. It was beat up, sure, but it had this cool, retro vibe that I just loved.

So, I started searching. I checked online marketplaces, local classifieds, everything. Found a few, but they were either way too expensive or total rust buckets. Then, one day, bam! There it was – a listing for a Spree in decent condition, and the price was right.

Getting It Home

I contacted the seller, went to check it out, and it was love at first sight. We haggled a bit, of course, because who doesn’t love a good bargain? And then it came home with me.

Getting it home was an adventure in itself. I don’t have a truck, so I had to borrow my buddy’s. We managed to squeeze it in, tied it down with some old rope, and drove real slow all the way back.

The First Look

Once I got it in my garage, I gave it a good once-over. It was definitely used, but not abused. Some scratches, a little rust here and there, but nothing major. The seat was ripped, but that’s an easy fix. The engine, from what I could tell, was free.

  • Tires: They were old and cracked. Definitely needed replacing.
  • Brakes: Felt spongy. Probably needed to be bled, or maybe even new cables.
  • Lights: Only the headlight worked. The turn signals and brake light were out.
  • Body: a little rust on it.

Fix up

I started by cleaning it up. Gave it a good wash, scrubbed off some of the grime, and started to see its potential. It was red, paint flaking in a few spots. I ordered some new tires online, along with some brake cables, and a new seat cover. While I waited for those to arrive, I started working on the electrical system.

I traced the wires, checked the connections, and found a few loose ones. After some fiddling, I managed to get the turn signals and brake light working! It was a small victory, but it felt great. I love fixing the electrical system, it give me some fun.

The Engine

Now for the big one – the engine. I pulled the spark plug, and it was pretty fouled. Cleaned it up, put it back in, and gave the kickstart a try. Nothing. Not even a sputter. So, I figured it was probably the carburetor.

I pulled the carburetor off, took it apart, and yeah, it was gunked up. I soaked it in some cleaner, blew it out with compressed air, and put it all back together. Put the carb back on the engine, turned the fuel on, and gave it another kick.

And… it started! It coughed and sputtered a bit at first, but then it smoothed out and idled nicely. I was so stoked! I let it run for a while, checked for leaks, and everything seemed good.

I take it for the road, it run smoothly. I will continue to fix the little things, let it looks better.

It’s still a work in progress, but it’s running, and that’s a huge step. I’m excited to keep tinkering with it, and eventually get it back on the road. Maybe even give it a custom paint job. Who knows? It’s all part of the fun.
