Having Trouble with Comet Can? How to Open It Right!

So, I was messing around in my kitchen the other day, trying to get into this can of Comet cleanser. You know, the kind with the metal top and those little holes you’re supposed to punch open? Yeah, that one. I grabbed my trusty can opener, the old-fashioned kind with the sharp, pointy end. I lined it up with the edge of the can, gave it a good whack with the heel of my hand, and started twisting. Nothing. I tried again, this time putting a little more muscle into it, but the can opener just slipped off.

Having Trouble with Comet Can? How to Open It Right!

Frustrated, I decided to switch tactics. I remembered seeing someone use a screwdriver to open one of these cans once, so I rummaged through my toolbox and found a flathead screwdriver. I positioned it over one of the little holes, gave it a tap with a hammer, and… still nothing. The metal was too thick, and the screwdriver just wouldn’t go through. I even tried using a nail, thinking maybe a sharper point would work better, but that didn’t do the trick either.

At this point, I was starting to feel like the can was winning. But I wasn’t about to give up. I took a step back, looked at the can, and noticed something I hadn’t seen before. There were these tiny, almost invisible lines around the edge of the lid, right where it met the can. I grabbed my can opener again, but this time, instead of trying to punch through the top, I used the sharp point to pry up the edge of the lid, following those little lines.

Getting There

  • First try: Used the can opener to punch the top. Failed.
  • Second try: Switched to a screwdriver, then a nail. Still failed.
  • Eureka moment: Noticed the tiny lines around the edge of the lid.

It took a bit of wiggling and prying, but slowly, the lid started to lift. I kept working my way around the can, and finally, with a satisfying pop, the whole top came off. I felt like I’d just conquered Mount Everest or something. All that effort for a can of cleanser, but hey, a win is a win, right? And now I know, sometimes you gotta think outside the box, or in this case, outside the top of the can, to get the job done.

So next time you’re faced with a stubborn Comet can, remember my little adventure. Don’t just try to force it open. Look for those little lines, use the right tool, and with a little patience, you’ll get that lid off without breaking a sweat (or a nail). Happy cleaning!
