Golf Feet Position: Best Ways for More Consistent Shots

Okay, so I’ve been messing around with my golf stance lately, specifically where I put my feet. It’s something I kinda took for granted, but I realized it was probably messing with my consistency. So, I decided to really dig in and figure out what works best for me.

Golf Feet Position: Best Ways for More Consistent Shots

First, I hit the driving range. Just me, a bucket of balls, and a whole lot of awkward adjustments. I started with what I thought was my normal stance, and, well, let’s just say the results were all over the place. Some shots went straight, some hooked, some sliced… you name it.

Experimenting with Width

I figured I’d start with the width of my stance. I tried a super narrow stance, like my feet were almost touching. Felt weird, and I almost fell over a couple of times. My shots were weak and wobbly. Definitely not the way to go.

Then I went to the opposite extreme – a really wide stance, like I was trying to do the splits (almost!). This felt a little more stable, but I lost a lot of power, and my swing felt restricted. I couldn’t really rotate my hips properly.

  • Narrow stance = unstable, weak shots.
  • Wide stance = stable-ish, but no power.

So, I started experimenting with something in between. I found that a shoulder-width stance felt pretty good. I could still rotate, but I also felt grounded. I started hitting the ball a bit more consistently, but something still felt off.

Playing with Foot Angle

Next, I focused on the angle of my feet. I’ve always just kinda pointed my toes forward, but I read somewhere that flaring your feet out a bit can help with rotation. So, I gave it a shot.

I started by flaring out my left foot (I’m a right-handed golfer) just a little bit, maybe 20-30 degrees. Wow, what a difference! It felt way easier to turn my hips through the shot. I started hitting the ball further and straighter almost immediately.

Then I tried flaring out my right foot a bit too. This felt a little less impactful, but it did seem to help me maintain my balance a bit better. I ended up flaring it out just a tiny bit, maybe 10 degrees.

It is not easy for me to say the specific degrees about the angle, I just did it according to my feelings, maybe I will use a tool to measure it some day.

After a couple of hours of tinkering, I think I’ve found a stance that works pretty well for me. It’s not perfect, and I’m sure I’ll keep tweaking it, but it’s definitely an improvement. The key takeaway? Don’t be afraid to experiment and find what works best for your body and your swing.

There is no single solution for all, just keep doing and practicing, then we can make it!
