Golf Ball Position for Driver: Avoid Common Mistakes Beginners Make!

Okay, so I’ve been struggling with my driver lately. It’s been all over the place – hooks, slices, you name it. I decided to really focus on one thing today: ball position. I’ve heard so many different things, so I wanted to see what actually worked for me.

Experiment Time!

I grabbed my driver and a bucket of balls and headed to the range. I figured the best way to figure this out was to just hit a bunch of balls and see what happened.

First, I started with what I thought was the “normal” position.

  • I teed the ball up pretty high.
  • I positioned the ball off the instep of my lead foot (I’m a righty, so that’s my left foot).
  • I made sure my feet, and hips were aligned parrallel to the target.

I hit a few shots, and…mixed results. Some were okay, some were way right. I felt like I was reaching for the ball a little bit.

Next, I moved the ball back a bit.

  • The ball was now a bit closer to the center, more towards the middle of the feet.

Nope. Definitely not. I felt like I was trapping the ball, and everything was going low and left. It was hard for me to get the face square at the point of contact.

Then, I tried moving the ball forward.

  • I moved the ball, it was probably a ball or two in front of my lead heel.

This felt…interesting. I felt like I had more time to get the clubhead back to square. I hit a few, and wow! They were going straighter and much farther. I felt like I was really hitting up on the ball, which I know is what you’re supposed to do with the driver.

My Conclusion (For Now!)

For me, at least today, having the ball slightly forward of my left heel felt the best. It gave me the best combination of distance and accuracy. I’m sure I’ll keep tweaking things, but this is a great starting point. I’m actually excited to get back out there and hit some more!

It’s all about experimenting and finding what works for your swing. Don’t be afraid to try different things and see what happens! What do you guys think?
