Okay, so I’ve been digging into this whole “homologation rally cars” thing, and man, it’s a rabbit hole! I wanted to share what I’ve been up to, ’cause it’s pretty wild.

The Start of My Messy Journey
It all started with me seeing some awesome vintage rally footage. I got curious about these cars, and that’s where the trouble began.
Figuring Out What “Homologation” Even Means
First, I had to actually figure out what homologation even was. Turns out, it’s basically a fancy way of saying car manufacturers had to build a certain number of road-going versions of their rally cars to be allowed to race. Sneaky, right?
Diving into the Research
So, I started looking up all these cars. Here’s a very rough list of what I poked around in:
- Lancia Stratos: That wedge shape? Iconic.
- Audi Quattro: All-wheel drive madness.
- Ford Escort RS Cosworth: That giant wing!
- Subaru Impreza 22B STi: A legend, plain and simple.
- Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution: Many many generations of rally monsters.
Getting Lost in the Details
Then I fell in even deeper. I found myself checking out old forum posts, watching grainy videos, and reading old magazine scans, and get parts diagrams! You find out a lot of details, and a lot of things related to the cars.

Realizing How Rare These Cars Are
The big thing I realized? These cars are rare. Because they only had to make a limited number, finding one, let alone affording one, is a serious challenge. And finding out how to keep them in good condition is even more challenging, especially with rare parts.
My (Current) Conclusion
For now, I’m still in the “dreaming” phase. Maybe one day I’ll own one of these beasts, but for now, I’m content just learning about them and appreciating the lengths manufacturers went to, just to go racing. It’s a cool piece of automotive history, and I’m glad I stumbled into it.
