Okay, so I was hanging out with my buddies the other day, and we got into this big debate about football. You know how it is, right? Just some dudes talking sports. We were trying to figure out, like, which team was the biggest underdog to ever win the Super Bowl.

I had this idea that it might be the Giants from a few years back. They weren’t super hot during the regular season, but man, they really turned it on in the playoffs. So, I grabbed my phone and started digging around.
First, I just did a regular search, typing in something like, “worst team to win Super Bowl”. A bunch of stuff came up, but I needed to narrow it down to the details I wanted. I figured the team with the lowest regular-season win rate who still made it to the Super Bowl was probably my best bet.
After looking through a few different articles, it started to look like I was right about the Giants. Specifically, the 2011 team. I mean, their record was only 9-7. That’s not terrible, but it’s definitely not what you expect from a champion. But here’s the crazy part: they didn’t just make it to the big game, they actually won the whole thing! They beat the Patriots, who were, like, everyone’s favorites that year. What a game!
To be sure, I tried to make a list of all the super bowl winners from worst record to best.
-
2011 New York Giants with a regular season of 9-7, that means they won 56.25% of their games.
-
1979 Pittsburgh Steelers with a regular season of 12-4, that means they won 75% of their games.
-
2007 New York Giants with a regular season of 10-6, that means they won 62.5% of their games.
There are a lot more teams but I won’t go into that much detail.
It was a pretty cool feeling to realize I was right. I showed my friends what I found, and we ended up talking about that game for, like, another hour. It just goes to show you, anything can happen in the playoffs. The 2011 Giants are a total inspiration. It is crazy to think about how they pulled it off!
Anyway, that’s my little story about how I figured out which team was the lowest-seeded team to win a Super Bowl. Just goes to show you, a little bit of digging can lead to some pretty cool discoveries.
