Easy Guide: How to Ratchet Strap a Motorcycle for Safe Transport

Alright, so I had to haul my bike across state lines last weekend. And let me tell you, I was stressed about it. I’d never strapped a motorcycle down before, and the thought of my precious baby toppling over on the highway? Nope. Not happening. So, I did a ton of research, watched a bunch of videos, and then, well, I just did it. Here’s how it went down:

Getting Started: Gathering My Stuff

First things first, I needed the right gear. I already had a decent trailer, thankfully. Then I made sure to get some good quality ratchet straps. Don’t cheap out on these, people! I got four of them, figuring that was better than not having enough. I also grabbed some soft loops – these are key for protecting your bike’s finish. Oh, and a chock for the front wheel is super helpful, if you have one.

The Pre-Tie-Down Ritual

Before I even thought about straps, I made sure my bike was positioned correctly on the trailer. I rolled it up, centering the front wheel in the chock (seriously, use a chock!). I also made sure the bike was in neutral, but I put the kickstand up. This part is important, don’t tie the bike down with the kickstand down as that will mess up the suspension.

Strapping It Down: The Fun Part (Not Really)

This is where I was sweating. Okay, so I started with the front. I used the soft loops around the lower triple clamp – basically, the sturdy part of the forks, not the handlebars. Then, I attached the ratchet straps to the soft loops and to the anchor points on the trailer. Make sure the straps are going forward and down at about a 45-degree angle.

  • Front Left: Soft loop around the lower triple clamp, ratchet strap to the trailer’s front-left anchor.
  • Front Right: Same thing, but on the right side, to the trailer’s front-right anchor.

I tightened the straps a little at a time, alternating sides. You don’t want to crank one side down all the way and then do the other. Go slow, keep it even. The goal is to compress the front suspension a bit, making the bike nice and solid.

Securing the Rear

Once the front was secure, I moved to the rear. I found some good spots on the frame – again, avoiding anything delicate like the exhaust or brake lines. Used the soft loops again, and attached the ratchet straps, pulling backward and down at that 45-degree angle.

  • Rear Left: Soft loop around a sturdy part of the frame, ratchet strap to the trailer’s rear-left anchor.
  • Rear Right: You guessed it, same thing on the right side, to the trailer’s rear-right anchor.

Same deal as the front, I tightened them gradually, making sure everything was snug and even.

The Jiggle Test

Once I thought I had it all strapped down, I gave the bike a good shake. Like, a really good shake. It barely budged. That’s what you want! If it’s wobbly, something’s not tight enough. I went around and gave all the ratchets a few more clicks, just to be sure.

Double-Checking and Hitting the Road

Before I took off, I double-checked everything. All the straps, all the connections, made sure nothing was rubbing against the bike that shouldn’t be. And then, I hit the road, taking it slow at first, and checking the straps again after a few miles.

I am happy to say the trip was successful! I got my bike from point A to Point B with no problems. It was a learning experience, for sure, but now I feel way more confident about hauling my bike in the future.
