Adding a Spoiler to Go Faster: Does Spoiler Actually Work?

Okay, so I’ve always wondered about car spoilers. Do they actually make a car go faster? I mean, they look cool, but do they really do anything? I decided to do some digging and, well, kinda test it out myself.

Adding a Spoiler to Go Faster: Does Spoiler Actually Work?

My Little Experiment

First, I hit up the internet. I found a bunch of stuff about downforce and how spoilers are supposed to push the car down onto the road, giving you better grip, especially when you’re going around corners super fast. Sounds legit, right? But a lot of it was, like, really technical, with formulas and stuff. I just wanted to know if it felt different.

So, I didn’t do anything super scientific. I have this regular car. I drove it around my usual route – some city streets, a bit of highway. Just normal driving. I paid attention to how it felt, especially when turning.

Then, I found this cheap, attachable spoiler. Easy to put it on, it is not something permanent. I put the spoiler, and drove the exact same route. Again, I pay attention to how the car feels.

The “Results” (Totally Not Scientific)

  • Normal Driving: Honestly, in regular, everyday driving, I didn’t notice a huge difference. Maybe, maybe, the car felt a tiny bit more stable on the highway at higher speeds, but it could have been my imagination.
  • Cornering: This is where I thought I might feel something. But, again, at normal speeds, it was hard to tell. I’m not a race car driver, so I wasn’t taking turns at crazy speeds.

So, my totally unscientific conclusion? For regular driving, a spoiler probably doesn’t make your car faster. It might make a tiny difference in handling at high speeds, but it’s not like you’re suddenly going to be a speed demon. It’s more likely that you feel different when you driving fast on the track. I think the spoiler is doing something at this moment.

I think, for most of us, spoilers are more about the look than anything else. And that’s fine! If you like how it looks, go for it. But don’t expect it to magically transform your car into a race car. At least, that’s what I found out from my little experiment.
