So, I saw this online challenge thing, “Irish for David,” and I thought, “Why not?” I mean, I’ve always kinda liked the sound of Irish, even though I don’t understand a word. So I jumped right in.
First, I googled “learn Irish phrases” or something like that. Found a bunch of websites, some looked kinda sketchy, others seemed alright. I picked one that had audio clips, ’cause, you know, pronunciation is everything.
Starting with the Basics
- I started with the super basic stuff, like “hello” and “goodbye.” “Dia duit” (dee-ah gwit), that’s “hello.” Sounds kinda cool, right?
- Then, “slán” (slawn) for “goodbye.” Easy peasy. I practiced saying them out loud, probably sounding like a complete idiot, but hey, gotta start somewhere.
Next, I wanted to learn how to say “My name is David” in Irish. That’s where it got a bit trickier. I found a few different versions, and I wasn’t sure which one was right.
I spend time learning to say “My name is David” by “Is mise David”. It sounds a little difficult, but I can make it!
Putting it all Together
Finally, I tried to put it all together. “Dia duit, Is mise David. Slán!” I recorded myself saying it on my phone and listened back. Cringed a little, ngl, but it was recognizable! I even sent the recording to a friend who’s actually learning Irish, just for laughs (and maybe a little feedback).
So, that was my little “Irish for David” adventure. I definitely didn’t become fluent, but I learned a few phrases, had some fun, and maybe broadened my horizons a tiny bit. Might even try to learn a few more phrases later. Who knows?
