Okay, let’s talk about this whole haircut thing for us taller guys. It’s something I wrestled with for a while, honestly.
My Tall Guy Hair Journey
So, you know, being over six foot, you notice things. Like how certain clothes fit weird, or how you always hit your head on low doorways. But hair? Didn’t think much about it until I started noticing some styles just… didn’t work. They kinda threw off my whole look, made my head seem smaller or my neck look longer. It was weird.
My early haircuts were pretty basic, whatever was easy. Sometimes I’d let it grow out, other times buzzed it down. But then I saw pictures, or caught my reflection, and sometimes it just felt… off. Especially those styles with tons of volume piled right on top. Felt like I was adding extra inches I didn’t need, you know? Made me look a bit like a walking exclamation point.
The Trial and Error Phase
I decided I needed to figure this out. Started paying more attention. Looked at other tall guys, saw what they were doing. Realized I needed something that balanced things out, didn’t just shoot straight up.
- First, I tried going super short, like a buzz cut or crew cut. It was okay, low maintenance for sure. But sometimes it felt like it emphasized the length of my face or neck. Didn’t always feel balanced.
- Then I swung the other way, tried growing it out a bit. That was tricky too. Too much bulk on the sides could make my head look wide, which also felt strange with a long frame.
- Started talking more with barbers. Instead of just saying “short on the sides, leave some length on top,” I tried explaining why. Like, “Hey, I’m pretty tall, so I don’t want too much height on top, can we keep it textured but relatively flat?” or “Need to avoid making my head look too narrow, maybe blend the sides more gradually?”
What Started Working For Me
Communication was key, really. Once I started explaining the ‘tall guy problem’, barbers got it. We started experimenting with styles that had structure but controlled volume.
Found that slightly shorter sides worked well, but not drastically short like a high fade sometimes. A taper fade often looked better, more gradual. On top, styles with texture, like a textured crop or a quiff kept low and pushed slightly forward or to the side, seemed to work. It gave style without adding that towering effect.
Even a classic side part, kept neat and not too voluminous, became a reliable option. The main thing was avoiding that big, vertical poof on top.
Where I Landed
These days, I usually go for a textured style on top, maybe finger-length, something I can push around a bit but doesn’t stand straight up. And I stick with a medium or low fade on the sides, maybe a taper. It feels balanced. It looks neat. Doesn’t make me feel self-conscious about adding visual height.
It took some experimenting, some bad haircuts along the way, definitely. But just paying attention to proportion and learning how to talk to the person cutting my hair made a huge difference. It’s less about a specific named cut and more about the principles: control the vertical volume, balance the sides, and communicate your concerns. That’s what worked for me.
