Okay, so the other day, I was messing around with the NYT Mini Crossword, right? It’s usually a breeze, something I do to kill time. But this one clue pops up: “You’re slaying!, to a drag queen.” I’m like, what? I mean, I get crosswords can be a bit out there, but this one had me stumped.
First, I tried thinking of all the slang I know. You know, the usual stuff like “yas” or “slay.” But none of them fit. The clue was specifically for a drag queen, so I figured it had to be something a bit more… specialized. I started racking my brain, trying to remember any drag shows I’d seen or any drag queens I follow online. Nothing.
Then, I started to dig a little deeper. I read about how these words were like gold stars given to performers who really brought it. Big talent, big showmanship, the whole nine yards. And apparently, “slay” also got used for looking absolutely killer – hair, makeup, outfit, attitude, all of it.
So, I’m going through all these crossword forums and websites, trying to find an answer. And let me tell you, it felt like everyone else was just as lost as I was. People were posting all sorts of guesses, but nothing seemed to stick.
- I read comments like, “What even is this clue?”
- And another one that said “The New York Times is wildin’ with this one.”
Finally, after what felt like hours, I stumbled upon this one forum where someone mentioned the word “werk.” I thought, “Could it be?” It kinda made sense. It’s a word I’d heard before, but never really knew the meaning of. I plugged it into the crossword, and boom! It fit.

Turns out, “werk” is the answer. I guess it’s a common phrase in the drag community. Who knew? It was a wild ride, but I finally cracked the code. Now I can add “werk” to my vocabulary, thanks to a weird crossword clue. I mean, the whole experience was so random. But, I got to say it was pretty fun learning something new. I’m not going to become a drag expert or anything, but it’s a cool little piece of trivia I picked up.
I guess it was a fun ride. But I’m still not sure why that clue is in the NYT Mini Crossword, but then again, I’m not the crossword expert.
