Okay, so, I’ve been messing around with my Yamaha R1 lately, trying to figure out its dry weight. You know, just for kicks and maybe to brag a little to my buddies.

First off, I dug through all the manuals and papers I got when I bought the bike. No luck there. Everything was about wet weight, which is cool and all, but not what I was after. I mean it’s about 199 kg, but that includes all the fluids and stuff. I needed that pure, no-fluids number.
Next, I hit up the internet, browsing through forums and websites. I found some people talking about older models, like one guy mentioned his 09 R1 was apparently 188kg dry. Then I scrolled through some more discussions, but it was mostly folks arguing about the best mods or something, I even saw mentions of the bike’s performance and history in competitions like the Superbike World Championship and Suzuka 8Hr, which was interesting, but not helpful for me.
Feeling a bit stuck, I decided to take a more hands-on approach. I started looking at the bike itself, focusing on parts that might affect weight. There was this bit about a lightweight titanium muffler and heat shield that Yamaha uses to reduce weight, so that’s something, right?
I also found a bunch of pictures and specs for the 2021 and 2025 models online. Cool to look at, but they didn’t have the info I needed either. Although the newer models are lighter, it feels milder low down than perhaps any previous R1.
After all that, I’m still not 100% sure about the exact dry weight of my R1. It’s a bit of a bummer, but it’s been a fun little project. At least I learned a bit more about my bike and what makes it tick, even if I didn’t get the exact number I was hoping for. I might consider removing parts and weighting them in the future to find the exact weight. Maybe I’ll update you guys if I ever get around to it.

- Looked through manuals – found nothing useful.
- Searched online – found some info on older models and competitions, but nothing concrete.
- Examined the bike – noted the lightweight muffler.
- Checked newer model specs – still no exact dry weight.
So yeah, that’s my little adventure with trying to find out the dry weight of my Yamaha R1. Not the result I wanted, but still a good time.
