So I’ve been playing a lot of Scrabble with friends lately, right? Kept losing when letters lined up near the top or bottom row where those double/triple word scores sit. Needed high-value plays but kept blanking on words ending with vowels, especially “i”. Got wrecked last Tuesday when Jenna slapped down “tiki” for like 30 points and I couldn’t counter. Annoying as hell.

How I Started Digging
Grabbed my dusty Scrabble dictionary first – flipped straight to the “I” section. Started scribbling down every short word ending with “i” on a pizza-stained napkin: “ski”, “taxi”, “alibi”. Realized some tricks fast:“ki” exists? That’s a lifesaver for dumping a K! Then noticed patterns:
- Lots come from other languages, like “biryani” or “chili”
- Short ones are gold: “pi”, “xi”, “bi” (who knew??)
- Plurals? Mostly “is” endings, like “cacti”
My notebook looked like a ransom note by page three.
The Practice Grind
Tried memorizing first – total fail. Brain fog after “radii” and “khaki”. Switched to making flashcards with cut-up cereal boxes. Wrote words on front, definitions/stem words on back. Like “naan” becomes “nai”? Makes sense for Indian cuisine. Tested myself while waiting in lines:
- Grocery queue: “nisi” (legal term, conditional)
- Gas station: “globi” (little round things)
Embarrassing when I muttered “origami” at an ATM, but hey, progress.
Played solo games against my cat (she cheats). Focused placement on premium squares:shoved “obi” onto triple word with a blank tile as “O”. 27 points! Crammed “wadi” vertically against “zit” last weekend. Jenna called it “obscure” but dictionary proved it’s a dry riverbed. Felt glorious.

What Finally Clicked
Noticing roots helped tons:
- Music/art words: “solfatari”, “bikini”
- Plurals from Latin/Greek: “fungi”, “stimuli”
- Random food: “macaroni”, “broccoli” (both Scrabble-legal!)
Started seeing board opportunities faster – hooks to build off like adding “s” to “tali” to make “talis”. Won three straight games after drilling these.
Biggest surprise? How many common words I overlooked. “Sushi” sat in my vocabulary forever, but never clicked as an “i-ender” play. Now I’m that jerk slapping down “qadi” for 42 points. No regrets. Still hunting “za” to complete the set though…
