It’s about the grit to tear down your “masterpiece” when you realize it’s built on a foundation of sand, and then starting over. I think I rewrote that inventory module three times. Each time felt like a piece of my soul was ripped out.

So now, when I hear some fresh-faced kid talking big about their “gd knowledge” after finishing a 10-hour course, I just nod and smile. Sure, buddy. Go try making something that doesn’t fall apart when a player does something unexpected. Go wrestle with save states, or networking, or just making a character jump feel right. That’s where the real learning happens.

It’s not just about what engine you use – Unity, Unreal, Godot, whatever. They’re all just tools. And like any tool, they can build wonders, or they can help you make a spectacular mess. GD knowledge is about knowing how to clean up that mess, again and again.

I actually shelved that project later on. Not ’cause of the inventory – I’d tamed that beast. But the whole thing got too big, too ambitious for one person. And that, my friends, is another crucial piece of gd knowledge: knowing when to quit, or at least, when to scale down. Better to have a small, finished game than a huge, epic dream gathering dust on your hard drive. That’s a lesson that cost me a lot of wasted months on other projects before it finally sunk in. Still stings a bit, thinking about those failed attempts, but hey, that’s experience, right? That’s more of that hard-earned gd knowledge.
