So today I got wondering whatever happened to Edwin Maysonet. Y’know, that infielder guy? He popped up on an old MLB The Show roster I was browsing. Got me thinking: dude kinda vanished after a few years. Decided to dig into it properly.
Starting Simple
First thing I did, fired up my laptop. Figured I’d start with the basics. Typed his name straight into Baseball Reference. Found his profile quick enough. Saw he played parts of three seasons with Houston Astros, mostly 2008 and 2009. Numbers weren’t eye-popping, .205 average… oof. Mostly a bench guy filling in. Pretty standard utility infielder stuff early on. Milwaukee Brewers picked him up for 2012. Barely played then. Records kinda just… stopped after that year. Weird.
Deeper Scraping
Alright, Baseball Reference gave me the when, but not the why. Needed more dirt. Hopped over to Fangraphs. Same basic stats. Dug into the minor league sections further down his page. Now that told a story man. Guy was basically a lifer down there!

The Real Scoop Hunting
Stats weren’t cutting it. Time to dig for news, rumors, anything. Googled like mad:“Edwin Maysonet retirement”, “Maysonet injury”, “whatever happened to Edwin Maysonet”. Took some coffee breaks during this part, made a sandwich. Frustrating at first. Then I hit paydirt in some dusty corners of the net.
Found an old forum post from 2014 on a Milwaukee fan site. Had a dude mentioning seeing Maysonet play for the Triple-A Nashville Sounds that year (2014). He mentioned Edwin “fighting some nagging injuries”. Hmm. Interesting lead.
Kept scrolling deeper. Found references, super vague ones mind you, in a couple of minor transaction roundups from like, 2013/2014 time. Phrases like “placed on the 7-day disabled list” popped up a couple times for different minor league teams he signed with. Then, bam. Found a short paragraph in a minor league transaction wire report from March 2015. Said something like “Veteran infielder Edwin Maysonet, recently signed by an Atlantic League team, has been released due to a lack of recovery from persistent shoulder issues.” Shoulder! Okay, now we’re getting somewhere.
Checked his Indy ball stats right after that hint. They were… brutal. Like, low .100s average bad. And very few games played in short stints. That screamed “playing hurt” and probably “can’t physically do it anymore”.
Putting the Pieces Together
Made sense, thinking about it. Utility infielders gotta throw across that diamond hard and accurate. A bum shoulder? Career killer for that position. Explains why his last MLB chance was Milwaukee clinging to him in 2012 but barely playing him. They musta seen something wasn’t right. Explains why he kept bouncing around the minors after – teams take flyers on vets with MLB time, hoping he heals up. Sounds like the shoulder just never got right.
Remembered finding an obscure Houston Chronicle piece from around 2010 mentioning an earlier “minor shoulder procedure” when he was still with the Astros org. Maybe that was the start of it. Fastball caught him wrong, weird throw, who knows. Injury just piled up over years. Coulda sworn I saw a screenshot once of a Mexican League roster from 2016 that briefly had his name, but no stats attached. Think he tried one last comeback down south, but clearly nothing came of it. Shoulder was probably toast.
Where Did He Go?
The trail ran cold after 2015. No formal retirement announcement, just… gone. Searched socials – nada public really. Found a LinkedIn profile (I think it was him!) showing him living in Puerto Rico, working in some kinda sales or management gig outside baseball since like 2016. Made sense. Probably just quietly accepted his body couldn’t handle it anymore. Shut the glove down for good.
Funny thing though. Never saw one definitive article saying “Edwin Maysonet retires”. Just faded out slowly as the injuries piled up. Guess that’s how it ends for so many guys who grind it out that long. One day you just can’t throw the ball. Poof. Career over. Never found real closure for him, just connected the dots on a busted shoulder ending a hard-working journeyman’s ride. Weirdest dang thing, how quick you can disappear from the game. Makes you think.
