Okay, so I was thinking about this whole ‘coke wins’ thing the other day. It wasn’t like some big research project, just something I noticed, you know?

We had this big family get-together last summer. A barbecue out back. My job was drinks. Simple enough, right? I went to the store, and I figured, let’s get a mix. Got some Coke, sure, but also grabbed Pepsi, some store-brand stuff, lemonades, iced tea, the works. Variety is the spice of life, or so they say.

So I get back, ice everything down in coolers. People start showing up. And it was kinda funny watching what happened.

The Cooler Situation

First off, almost everyone who grabbed a soda went for the Coke without even really looking. It was like muscle memory. Kid, grandma, uncle, didn’t matter. Reach in, grab the red can or the classic bottle.

Then, maybe an hour or two in, someone asks, “Hey, any more Coke?”

I look in the cooler. Plenty of Pepsi left. Loads of the other stuff. But the Coke? Almost gone. We had bought, like, equal amounts of Coke and Pepsi, maybe even a bit more Coke just in case, but it vanished way faster.

I had to make a second run to the store, mid-party. And what did I buy? Mostly Coke, because that’s what people were actually drinking.

Why Though?

It got me thinking. It’s not like the other drinks were bad. Some people even say they prefer the taste of Pepsi in blind tests, right? But when it comes down to it, at a real gathering, people just defaulted to Coke. Why?

  • Maybe it’s just habit, what they grew up with.
  • Maybe it’s the branding, that red color is just everywhere.
  • Maybe it’s that bottle shape, you just know it when you grab it.

I don’t know the exact science behind it. I didn’t do surveys or anything. All I know is, I started with a cooler full of options, and by the end of the day, the demand was clear. People wanted Coke. The other stuff mostly just sat there.

So yeah, from my little backyard experiment, watching people just grab what they know and like without thinking twice… seems like Coke just wins these little everyday battles. It’s just the go-to. Simple as that.
