Alright, so this whole ‘3k 4′ business. It’s been on my mind to share how I tackled this one, ’cause it wasn’t as straightforward as you’d think. It became a bit of a personal challenge, really.

I got this idea, see? A pretty simple one, or so I thought. I had this one specific digital file, nothing huge, just about 3k in size. The goal was to get this little fella to display nice and proper on four different older screens I had collected over time. You know, the kind you keep in the garage thinking, “I’ll use this someday.” Well, someday came.
My grand plan was simple: plug things in, maybe tweak a setting or two, and bam – ‘3k 4’ achieved. File on four screens. Easy peasy. Yeah, right. That’s never how these things go, is it?
Here’s the mess I walked into. Each screen had its own unique way of saying “nope”:
- The first screen, an old LCD, showed the image, but the colors were completely off. Looked like something out of a psychedelic dream, and not in a good way.
- The second one, a CRT monitor I kept for nostalgia, flat out refused to even detect the signal when that specific file was supposed to be up. Just a blank stare.
- The third screen, a small portable one, did display it, but it stretched the image so badly everything looked long and thin. Totally unusable.
- And the fourth, another LCD, had this awful flicker, but only when trying to show this particular 3k file. Gave me a headache just looking at it.
So, I rolled up my sleeves. This wasn’t just about getting it to work anymore; it was about stubbornness. I started by trying to convert that tiny 3k file into a bunch of different formats. Then, I spent hours, and I mean hours, digging through the on-screen menus of these ancient displays. You know the type – clunky interfaces, cryptic labels. It felt like I was an archaeologist deciphering hieroglyphs.
I must’ve tried a dozen different cables too, thinking maybe it was a connection issue. Swapped ’em around, jiggled ’em, the works. I even went online, digging through ancient forums hoping for a clue. Most of the posts were from like, ten years ago, but sometimes you find gold in those old threads.

This whole ordeal reminded me of when I was a kid, trying to get a pirated game to run off a floppy disk on a computer that was barely powerful enough to run a calculator. You’d just keep trying things, rebooting, tweaking config files, fueled by sheer hope and a refusal to admit defeat. That was the ‘3k 4’ vibe for me.
After what felt like an eternity – probably a good few evenings of focused frustration – I got there. Kinda. It’s not a perfect victory, let’s be clear. The ‘3k 4’ is operational, but with quirks. One screen still has a faint, weird tint if you look at it from the side. Another one takes its sweet time loading the image. But, bottom line, that 3k file now shows up on all four screens, more or less as intended.
Was it worth all the hassle for such a minor thing? Logically, probably not. But there’s a certain satisfaction in wrestling with old tech and bending it to your will, even if it’s for something completely trivial. That’s my ‘3k 4’ story. A bit of a grind, a lot of head-scratching, but we got there in the end.
