Getting Started with Axolotl Taming
So I decided to try keeping those cute Axolotls as pets in Minecraft last week. Heard they’re great underwater buddies but had zero clue how to actually tame them properly. Grabbed my trusty iron bucket and headed straight to the nearest cave pond.

First Failed Attempts
BIG mistake number one – thought they’d eat regular fish like salmon. Spent ages fishing just to throw raw salmon at them. Those little pink dudes completely ignored it! Kept swimming away while I wasted stacks of fish. Realized I needed tropical fish instead after checking some forums.
The Tropical Fish Hunt
Rushed to warm oceans with my boat, scanning for coral reefs. When I finally spotted those tiny blue tropical fish? Tried whacking them with bare hands – major regret. They kept vanishing! Took three deaths by drowned zombies before remembering I needed a water bucket for catching them alive.
- Scooped five tropical fish buckets
- Found deep cave with pink/blue axolotls
- Dropped fish near them cautiously
Finally Making Progress
When I released the tropical fish, they actually swam toward it! The moment one nibbled – instant heart particles popped up around it. Used my empty bucket to scoop my new tamed axolotl. Felt unreal seeing it swim inside that bucket!
Pro Tips I Learned
After losing two axolotls from careless mining underwater:
- NEVER dig gravel near tamed axolotls
- They attack guardians but die against elder guardians
- Always carry multiple buckets – they wander off fast
Now my underwater base has three happily swimming axies! Next project: building them a proper coral paradise tank.
