Right then, let me tell you about my little trip to Waiehu Municipal Golf Course. Been meaning to check it out for ages, you hear all sorts of things, so I figured, time to see it for myself.

Getting There and First Look
So, I hopped in the car, made my way over. The drive itself wasn’t too bad, pretty standard stuff. Pulling into Waiehu, it’s not one of those flashy resort places, you know? Looked like your typical muni, a bit worn, but honest. First thing that hit me though? That ocean air. Seriously, you’re right there by the water. That was a good sign, I thought.
Walked into the pro shop, or whatever you’d call it. Place was simple. The fella behind the counter, he was alright. Got me signed in, paid my dues – pretty reasonable, gotta say, especially for Maui. No fuss, no fancy talk, just got me sorted. I appreciate that. Don’t need all the bells and whistles.
Out on the Course
So, out I went. First tee. Let me tell ya, this course, it’s got character. It’s not gonna beat you up with crazy length on every hole. Nah, it’s more about where you put the ball. You gotta think a bit. Some tight spots here and there.
And the views! Man, that’s the big seller. Some of these holes are literally a stone’s throw from the ocean. Waves crashing, the whole deal. You shank one into the rough? At least you got something pretty to look at while you’re cursing yourself. I definitely took a moment or two just to soak it in. You don’t get that everywhere.
Now, the conditions. Let’s be real. It’s a municipal course. The greens? They were…greens. You could putt on ’em. A bit bumpy, maybe a bit slow. But hey, they’re there. Don’t go expecting Augusta National, alright? Fairways were mostly okay. Saw some dry patches, but it’s an island, it gets a lot of play. It’s what you’d expect for the price, and then some with those views.

- Some holes were pretty open.
- Others, you really had to thread the needle.
- Wind was a factor, for sure. Especially on those ocean holes.
Memorable Bits and Pieces
There was this one par 3, number 16 I think it was. Right up against the water. Wind was absolutely whipping across. I’m not gonna lie, I donated a ball or two to the Pacific on that one. But the challenge of it, trying to hit that green with the spray practically in your face? Good stuff. That’s the kind of hole you remember, even if it eats your lunch.
Played through a group of locals. Seemed like regulars. Friendly enough. Shared a few nods. It’s that kind of place, not stuffy. Just people out playing golf.
The “Clubhouse” and Other Stuff
Didn’t really hang around the clubhouse much. Popped in for a cold drink after. Basic. Functional. Did the job. Looked like they had some snacks, the usual. No gourmet meals, but who’s going to a muni for that?
Practice facilities? Saw a putting green near the first tee. Looked alright. Didn’t really use it. Was too keen to get going. Sometimes you just want to get out there and swing the clubs, you know?
So, What’s the Verdict?
Look, Waiehu Municipal isn’t trying to be Kapalua or Wailea. It just isn’t. And that’s okay. It’s a working man’s course, or woman’s. It’s got its rough edges, no doubt about it. Some bits are a little scruffy.

But you know what? I had a genuinely good time. It’s honest golf. It’s affordable, which is a big plus around here. And those ocean views, they’re worth a fair bit on their own. If you’re looking for a relaxed round, don’t mind a place that’s not perfectly manicured, and you want to see some spectacular coastline while you play, then yeah, give Waiehu a shot. I’ll probably be back. Sometimes you just want to play golf without all the fuss, and this place fits that bill just fine.
