Top Drivers in Daytona 24 Qualifying 2024 (Who Might Win It)

Alright so yesterday I got totally obsessed with figuring out who actually has a shot at winning Daytona this year. The qualifying results were out, right? Figured I should really dig into it myself instead of just reading some headline predictions. Buckle up, this got messy.

Top Drivers in Daytona 24 Qualifying 2024 (Who Might Win It)

First Move: Hunting Down the Raw Data

Started simple. Just googled “daytona 24 qualifying results 2024”. Found ’em scattered across a few racing news sites. Copied the top qualifiers for each class – GTP, LMP2, GTD Pro, GTD – into a super ugly Google Sheet. Like, columns everywhere. Times, teams, drivers, car models. All dumped in there.

Instantly noticed the BMW M Hybrid V8 snagging the pole for GTP. Renger van der Zande laying down that fast lap. Kinda surprised me, honestly. Thought the Cadillacs or Acuras might have it locked down more. Shows what I know!

The Real Grind: Trying to Make Sense of It

Now here’s where I spent way longer than planned. Having the qual times is one thing. Predicting who actually wins a 24-hour slog? Totally different animal. My process was kinda chaotic:

  • Stalked the Timing Sheets: Yeah, pole position matters for bragging rights, but I scrolled way down the qualifying sheets. Looking for teams consistently in the top bunch across multiple cars or drivers. Seeing who seemed “comfortable” fast, not just one flyer.
  • Watched Quali Highlights Obsessively: Hunted down clips. Not just watching the pole lap, but looking at others. Was that Acura twitchy? Did the Porsches look planted? How much traffic chaos did the GTP guys avoid?
  • Past Pain Points: Couldn’t help remembering last year’s drama. Which teams got tripped up by yellows? Who had reliability nightmares? Who always seemed to survive the middle-of-the-night madness? That reliability bit is HUGE, way bigger than qualifying speed. A fast car in the garage wins nothing.
  • The Driver Lineup Puzzle: This takes ages. Qualifying is often one hotshoe driver. But a 24-hour race needs four. So I started cross-referencing the driver rosters for the top teams. Spotting names I know are endurance monsters – guys who drive smart for 12 hours straight without binning it. Teams stuffing multiple “aces” into one car always catch my eye.
  • Hunch Factor: Gotta be honest, sometimes it’s just a feeling. Looking at the Acura teams, Wayne Taylor Racing and Meyer Shank Racing, they just feel like they know how to win this thing. But then that BMW was quick… can they last? That Porsche GTD Pro car looked super stable too… maybe better in traffic?

My Wild-Ass Guesses (Subject to Change by Lap 1)

After probably burning 3 hours down this rabbit hole? Here’s where my head landed:

  • GTP: Leaning Acura, Maybe Penske Porsche? Yeah, the BMW nailed pole, but winning from pole at Daytona is tough. The Acuras feel like safer bets, super strong lineup top to bottom. Penske Porsche is sneaky fast too. I think the winner comes from one of these three, probably whoever avoids the big shunt.
  • LMP2: PR1/Mathiasen Motorsports & Whelen Engineering Looked really solid throughout qualifying. Always tough in this class.
  • GTD Pro: Pfaff Motorsports’ Porsche 911 GT3 R Seriously impressive. Fast, stable, great drivers. Corvette Racing looked strong too – that yellow car always seems in the mix.
  • GTD: Winward Racing’s Mercedes AMG GT3 Grabbed pole, looked consistent. But this class is always chaotic pick ’em.

Big Question Mark: Honestly, the BMW pole speed makes me wonder. Can they translate that short burst into a full day? I’m skeptical, but open to being totally wrong. That’s the fun, right?

Ending Thoughts: This stuff is never clean. Qualifying gives hints, but it’s mostly a puzzle about endurance, strategy, driver smarts, and just plain luck. Pouring coffee and scanning driver rosters on a Saturday morning… yeah, it might not be “productive,” but hey, it’s fun figuring it out myself. Now let’s see how wrong I am when the actual race starts throwing curveballs!
