So, wrestling with Dineen’s work kinda felt like that. There’s no doubt it’s groundbreaking, foundational stuff in mathematics. Absolutely brilliant, no question. But for someone like me, who’s usually trying to solve a very concrete problem, trying to directly apply that level of deep, abstract theory is a massive undertaking. It’s not something you just pick up and use on a Tuesday afternoon.
My practical journey into Dineen’s domain mostly taught me a lot about the sheer depth of some academic work. And it made me really appreciate the people who can actually bridge that huge gap – the ones who can take that kind of intense theory and somehow, some way, make it useful in everyday applications. It’s a special skill.
For my part, after scratching the surface, I realized I needed to tackle something a bit more grounded for my project at the time. I gained a ton of respect for the complexity, but I also learned that sometimes, you gotta know which mountains are for admiring from a distance. I eventually shifted my focus to some more immediately applicable graph algorithms that I could actually implement and see results from relatively quickly. Still a challenge, but a different kind of challenge.
