Hey everyone, it’s your boy back again with another little experiment. Today’s topic is “opposite of acidic”. You know, I got thinking about this the other day when I was doing one of those mini crosswords in the newspaper.

So, I’m digging through this crossword, and I hit this clue: “opposite of acidic.” Now, I ain’t no chemist, but I vaguely remembered something about acids and bases from high school. I scratched my head for a bit, trying to dredge up those dusty old memories.

I started by hitting up the internet, just to get a refresher on what “acidic” actually means in the chemical sense. It’s all about pH levels, right? Acidic stuff has a low pH, and then there’s this other stuff with a high pH.

  • Searching Online: I typed in “opposite of acidic” into the search bar.
  • Reading Articles: I skimmed through a bunch of articles. Some were pretty technical, but I got the gist.
  • Remembering High School: I tried to recall my high school chemistry classes.

After a bit of digging, I found out that the word they’re looking for is “basic.” Yeah, like basic as in simple. But in chemistry, “basic” means something with a high pH, the opposite of acidic. Who knew, right?

Then I got curious. What are some everyday things that are “basic”?

  • More Searching: Back to the internet I went.
  • Making a List: I started jotting down examples of basic or “alkaline” substances.

Turns out, there are a bunch of things we run into all the time that are considered basic or alkaline. Stuff like baking soda, soap, and even certain veggies and fruits.

My Little Experiment

I even did a little experiment at home. I grabbed some baking soda and mixed it with water. Then, I found some old pH strips from a high school science kit – don’t ask why I still have them. I dipped a strip into the baking soda solution, and sure enough, it showed a high pH, meaning it’s basic.

So there you have it. The opposite of acidic is basic, and it’s not just some fancy word for crossword puzzles. It’s a real thing with real-world examples all around us. I never thought I’d be revisiting high school chemistry, but hey, you learn something new every day, even from a simple crossword clue. Keep on learning, folks!
