Alright, let’s talk about my March Madness bracket this year, and how Jay Bilas kinda, sorta, maybe influenced some of my picks. Spoiler alert: it’s a disaster, but a glorious disaster nonetheless!

It all started innocently enough. Every year, I fill out a bracket. I usually go with my gut, throw in a few upsets I “feel” are gonna happen, and then completely forget about it until the games start. This year, I decided to try something different. I wanted to be… smarter. More informed. Like those guys on ESPN who actually know what they’re talking about. Enter Jay Bilas.
I figured, hey, this dude knows college basketball inside and out. He’s been around forever. So, I started watching clips of him breaking down teams, highlighting key players, and predicting potential Cinderella stories. I listened to podcasts, read articles, the whole nine yards. I was determined to absorb all the Bilas-wisdom I could.
Phase 1: The Research
- First, I made a list of all the teams in the tournament. Sounds basic, I know, but I wanted to have a starting point.
- Then, I went on a Bilas-binge. YouTube, ESPN, you name it. I was watching him talk about everything from offensive efficiency to defensive schemes. My head started spinning.
- I took notes. Lots of notes. Key players, injury reports, coaching matchups… I felt like I was back in college (ironically).
Phase 2: The Bracket Building (aka The Delusion)
Okay, now for the fun part. Armed with my newfound Bilas-inspired knowledge, I started filling out my bracket. This is where things got interesting.
I remembered Bilas talking about this one team, saying they were “underrated” and “had the potential to make a deep run.” So, I penciled them in for the Sweet Sixteen. Then, I heard him mention another team’s star player, calling him a “game-changer.” Sweet Sixteen for them too!
I started second-guessing my initial instincts. My gut was telling me one thing, but Bilas’s words were echoing in my head. I changed picks. I scratched out names. I debated with myself like a madman. It was a beautiful, chaotic process.
Phase 3: The Reality Check (aka The Humbling)
And then the games started. And it all went downhill fast.
That “underrated” team? Bounced in the first round. That “game-changer”? Choked under pressure. My bracket was a mess. It looked like a toddler had attacked it with a highlighter.

I watched in horror as my carefully crafted, Bilas-influenced predictions crumbled before my very eyes. Teams I had confidently picked to win were getting upset left and right. My bracket was bleeding red ink.
The Takeaway
Look, I’m not blaming Jay Bilas. He knows his stuff. But here’s the thing I learned: there’s no foolproof method to predicting March Madness. It’s called “madness” for a reason.
Maybe I overthought it. Maybe I should have stuck with my gut. Maybe Jay Bilas is secretly a double agent working for the other teams. (Just kidding… mostly.)
At the end of the day, it’s just a game. And a hilariously unpredictable one at that. I still love college basketball, and I’ll still fill out a bracket next year. But maybe next time, I’ll just go with the mascot matchups. A tiger probably beats a blue jay, right?

So, that’s my March Madness story. A cautionary tale of overthinking, misplaced faith, and the sheer randomness of sports. What about you guys? How’s your bracket doing?
