Alright, so today I’m gonna walk you through my experience diving into the Louisiana 5th Congressional District 2024 stuff. Buckle up, it’s a bit of a ride.
First off, I started by just Googling it. Obvious, right? I wanted to see what the basic info was, who was running, and what the general vibe was around the election. I spent a good hour just clicking through news articles and candidate websites.
Next, I figured I needed to get a little more organized. I started making a list – a super basic one in a Google Doc – of the candidates. Name, party, a sentence or two about their platform, that kind of thing. It was messy, but it helped me keep track of who’s who.
Then, I decided to get a little more hands-on. I went digging for campaign finance data. This is where it got a little tedious. I spent what felt like forever navigating the FEC website, trying to figure out who was donating to whom. It’s not exactly user-friendly, let me tell you.
After wrestling with the FEC data, I started looking at local news sources. I wanted to get a feel for what the issues were that mattered to the people in the district. Turns out, there were a lot of town hall recordings posted online. I listened to a couple of those, just to hear the candidates speak directly to the voters. It gave me a much better sense of their priorities.
I even tried reaching out to some of the campaigns directly. I sent a few emails with some pretty basic questions about their positions on key issues. Surprisingly, a couple of them actually responded! That was pretty cool. I got some canned answers, sure, but it was still interesting to hear from them.
I wrapped things up by trying to find some independent analysis of the race. Polls, expert opinions, that sort of thing. I took everything with a grain of salt, of course, but it helped me get a broader perspective.
Here’s a quick rundown of what I learned:

Overall, it was a pretty interesting dive. It definitely gave me a better understanding of the election and the issues at stake. Would I do it again? Maybe. But next time, I’m definitely investing in a better spreadsheet to track all the data.
