So, there I was, totally ready to dive into the next episode of The Good Doctor. You know how it is, right? You get sucked into a series, characters become like old friends, and then you’re just on the edge of your seat, desperate to find out what happens next. That was me, all set for my evening dose of hospital drama and Shaun Murphy’s unique take on the world.

I did my usual routine. Fired up the streaming service, navigated to the show… and nothing. Just the listing for the previous episode. I checked the other usual spots online where info pops up, looked at the broadcast schedules. Nada. Zip. Zilch. It’s that special kind of mild frustration, isn’t it? Like expecting a package all day and the delivery guy just never shows.

I even found myself refreshing the page every few minutes. As if my clicking was somehow going to magically make the new episode materialize. I know, I know, it’s a bit silly. But when you’re anticipating something, even something small like a TV show, logic sometimes takes a little vacation.

Why this little wait felt like a bigger deal than usual

It’s funny, the little things that can get under your skin, or the things you cling to. For me, catching up with The Good Doctor has become more than just watching a show; it’s a punctuation mark at the end of some pretty hectic days. Lately, things have been… well, let’s just say ‘a tad overwhelming.’ My trusty old car, the one I’d patched up more times than I can count, decided to finally give up the ghost. And naturally, it chose to do this right in the middle of the busiest street, during peak hour, just as a massive project at work was hitting its most critical phase. Talk about timing, eh?

So, after a day wrestling with phone calls to scrap yards, deciphering insurance jargon that makes no sense, and trying to appease a boss who seems to think deadlines are mere suggestions for everyone but me, settling down for this show is my way to decompress. It’s a predictable comfort, a little island of calm in what’s felt like a stormy sea of late. It’s my signal to my brain that, okay, the day’s battles are done.

I remember when I first stumbled upon The Good Doctor. It was a few years back, I was sort of in-between jobs, with a bit too much time to think, if you know what I mean. A mate recommended it, said it wasn’t your typical medical fluff. And he was right. There was something about Shaun’s journey, his way of seeing things, that really resonated. Maybe it’s because I was feeling a bit like I was trying to navigate a new and confusing world myself back then. It just stuck with me.

It’s a bit like that time I decided I was going to become a master artisan baker during that first big lockdown. Remember that? Everyone was suddenly obsessed with sourdough. I got the special flour, the little basket thingy, the whole nine yards. My sourdough starter? Let’s just say it looked less like a living culture and more like something you’d find in a mad scientist’s lab. And the smell! After weeks of feeding it, coaxing it, I produced what could only be generously described as a very dense, slightly sour brick. My point is, you invest your time and a little bit of your hopes into these things, whether it’s a stubborn loaf of bread or waiting for your favorite character’s next move, because you’re looking for that little payoff, that small satisfaction.

So, what happened with the episode hunt?

Well, after my repeated refreshing failed to summon the episode from the digital ether, and I resisted the urge to start complaining loudly to my empty living room, I just… let it go for the night. Decided to pick up an actual book. You know, one made of paper. Felt quite revolutionary, to be honest.

I suppose there’s something to be said for anticipation. Or maybe that’s just a coping mechanism when things don’t happen on our preferred schedule. Patience is a virtue, or so they say. Still actively working on acquiring that particular virtue, especially when it comes to my TV shows.

Anyway, I’m sure the episode will turn up. They always do. It’ll probably be there tomorrow, or the day after, and I’ll be right back on the couch, ready to see what Dr. Murphy and the team are up to. But this whole little experience of waiting, it definitely got me thinking about the routines we build and why these fictional stories can take on such a big role in our real lives. Just a little slice of my evening drama, I guess. It’s the small things that make up the day, isn’t it?
