Mario Party 2 – Day at the Races Shenanigans

Alright, so the other night, me and a couple of buddies decided to fire up the old N64. You know how it is, sometimes you just gotta go retro. We landed on Mario Party 2, a classic, right? We were a few boards in, things were getting heated, and then BAM! The “Day at the Races” mini-game popped up. Oh boy, here we go.

So, “Day at the Races,” for those who don’t remember, is basically a betting game. You got your four racers: Whomp, Thwomp, Boo, and that Fly Guy. You gotta pick one and hope for the best. It’s pure luck, or so they say, but everyone has their superstitions, you know?

My “Strategy” – If You Can Call It That

Now, I’m not usually a betting man, but in Mario Party, all bets are off, literally. I looked at the lineup. It was like this:

  • Whomp: He looked slow, solid, but maybe too slow. A real long shot.
  • Thwomp: Even slower! Just slams down. How does he even move forward consistently? Pass.
  • Boo: Sneaky! I like sneaky. Boo has that unpredictable vibe, floats around, you never know.
  • Fly Guy: The speedy option, probably the favorite for most people, always zipping about.

I decided to go with my gut. Everyone else was overthinking it, trying to figure out patterns. I just squinted at the screen and pointed. “Gimme Boo!” I yelled. My friend, let’s call him Dave, he went for the Fly Guy, typical safe bet. My other pal, Sarah, picked Whomp, thinking he was due for a win or something. What a laugh that was.

The “Race” Itself

The “race” started. You don’t control anything, you just sit there and watch these little characters hop or float or whatever across the screen. Man, it’s tense! Fly Guy shot out to an early lead, of course. Dave was already getting cocky. “Told ya!” he kept saying, grinning like an idiot. My Boo was just kinda floating there, chilling in the middle of the pack. Whomp was, well, whomping along at the back as expected. Sarah was already groaning.

Then, the announcer started calling out the positions. “Fly Guy is in the lead!” then suddenly, “Boo is making a move!” My Boo started picking up serious speed! It was zipping past Thwomp, who was barely moving, then closing in on Fly Guy. Dave stopped his gloating pretty quick. The last few seconds were a blur. It was neck and neck, or… uh… float and float, between my Boo and his Fly Guy. The suspense was killing us!

And The Winner Is…

Freakin’ BOO! My Boo crossed the finish line just a hair ahead of that Fly Guy. I jumped up from the couch, yelling! “YES! IN YOUR FACE, DAVE! BOO IS THE KING!” It was glorious. The coins came rolling in. Not a massive jackpot, but enough to make a difference in the game and, more importantly, the bragging rights were all mine. Sarah’s Whomp eventually finished, poor guy. I don’t think Thwomp ever left the starting gate.

So yeah, that was my “Day at the Races” adventure this time around. Pure chaos, pure luck, but man, when your pick comes in, it feels amazing. Mario Party 2, still delivering those highs and lows after all these years. We played a few more rounds after that, but that little victory was definitely a highlight of the night for me. Good times, good times.
