Okay, so the other day, I needed to call my friend in Scotland. I haven’t called internationally in ages, so I was a bit lost. Here’s how I figured it out, step by step:

Figuring Out the Exit Code
First, I needed to find the “exit code” for my country(the US). You need this to tell your phone provider you’re making an international call.
I simply googled “US exit code” and boom, there it was: 011. I made a mental note of that.
Finding Scotland’s Country Code
Next, I have to find Scotland’s country code. It is used to direct my call to the right country.
Another quick Google search – “Scotland country code.” And it is: 44. I wrote that down next to the exit code.
Getting the Actual Phone Number
Of course, I had my friend’s number, I need to know how to dial a number within Scotland.

Putting It All Together
So, to actually make the call, I punched in the numbers in this order:
- My exit code: 011
- Scotland’s country code: 44
- My friend’s number(without the first ‘0’).
I pressed the call button, and it worked! A few rings and my friend picked up. We had a good, long chat. It felt good to reconnect, and it wasn’t nearly as complicated as I’d thought it would be.
