Okay, so I got curious about how much those F1 pit crew guys make. You know, the ones who change tires in like 2 seconds? I figured it’s gotta be decent, right?

So, I started digging. And what I mean by digging is good old-fashioned googling.
My Research Process
- First, I just typed in “F1 pit crew salary” and scrolled through a bunch of articles.
- I found some general numbers, but nothing super specific, lots of “it depends” kind of answers.
- I then changed my search phrase to something more specific, like “how much do f1 pit crew make per race,” and there was some more specific data.
Here is what I found. It’s not a king’s ransom, but it’s respectable, especially considering the high-pressure environment they work in.
Most of the information I found pointed to the same ballpark figures. It seems like the average pit crew member makes around $40,000 a year. That’s their base salary, like a regular job.
But then, they also get paid per race. From what I gathered, this is around $450 per race. Which makes sense, right? They’re only really “working” for a few seconds during the actual race, but they are at every race location.
And the really interesting part? They get bonuses! If their team wins, they apparently pocket an extra $250. Not bad for a few seconds of work, huh?

I also learned that it’s not like everyone on the pit crew gets paid the same. It varies depending on their specific role. I guess the guy handling the tire gun probably makes a bit more than the guy holding the spare, but that’s just a guess.
So yeah, after all my “research,” I came away with a better understanding. It’s a decent gig, with some good performance-based incentives. Not gonna make them millionaires, but they’re definitely not struggling.
