Alright, so I’ve been meaning to talk about this little experiment I ran for myself, which I kinda mentally dubbed “Veronika Tennis.” It’s not some official training program, mind you, just me trying to pick up a few things from watching this one player, Veronika. She’s got this way of playing, you know? Seems so effortless, but then the ball just flies.

Getting Started: The Bright Idea

It all kicked off a few weeks back. I was stuck in a bit of a rut, honestly. Work was the same old grind, and I needed something to shake things up. I’m a casual tennis player, hit the ball around on weekends, nothing serious. But then I caught one of Veronika’s matches on TV – don’t even remember who she was playing – but her focus, man, and a particular cross-court backhand she hit just stuck with me. I thought, “Okay, I’m gonna try and get that kind of focus, maybe even try to nail that shot.” Seemed like a good challenge.

So, the plan was simple:

  • Watch a bunch of her match replays. Like, really watch, not just glance.
  • Pick one or two things to focus on. I settled on her pre-serve routine and that killer backhand.
  • Hit the court and try to mimic it. What could go wrong, right?

The “Practice” – Or, My Comedy of Errors

First off, watching her play is one thing. Trying to do what she does? Whole different ball game. I started with the pre-serve routine. She does this little ball bounce, a specific look, then bam. I tried it. Felt like an idiot, mostly. Bounced the ball too high, then too low. Dropped it a couple of times. The guys on the next court probably thought I was having some kind of episode.

Then came the backhand. Oh boy. That was a journey. In the videos, her movement is so fluid, so compact. Me? I looked like I was swatting flies with a fishing rod.

I spent a good hour just trying to get the footwork and the swing path to feel remotely similar. Most of my shots either died in the net or sailed out to visit the car park. My arm started to ache in places I didn’t know I had muscles.

I even tried to record myself. Big mistake. Let’s just say the playback was humbling. I looked nothing like Veronika, not even a distant, poorly coordinated cousin. It was pretty funny, in a painful sort of way.

Some Realizations Hit Harder Than a Tennis Ball

After a few sessions of this “Veronika Tennis” boot camp, a few things became super clear. First, these pros make it look easy because they’ve put in thousands of hours. Shocking, I know. There’s no magic trick you can pick up from watching TV for a couple of hours. My body just doesn’t bend that way, and my timing, well, let’s just say it has a mind of its own.

The focus thing was interesting though. Trying to copy her pre-serve routine, even if I looked silly, did make me slow down a bit. It made me think about what I was doing, instead of just whacking the ball. So, maybe a tiny win there?

You know, the funny thing is, I got into this whole tennis thing more seriously a while back when I was trying to quit smoking. Needed something to do with my hands, and my lungs, once they started working again. Every hobby has its own weird origin story, I guess. This “Veronika Tennis” phase was probably just another one of those things – me trying to fix something that wasn’t really about tennis at all.

So, What’s the Verdict on “Veronika Tennis”?

Did I suddenly develop a pro-level backhand? Nope. Not even close. My regular game is still, well, my regular game. Maybe a tiny bit more thoughtful before I serve, but that’s about it.

But the whole thing wasn’t a total waste of time. It was a good reminder that improvement takes real work, not just wishful thinking. And sometimes, just going out there and trying something new, even if you fall flat on your face, is better than just sitting around. It got me out of that rut for a bit, made me laugh at myself, which is always a good thing.

So yeah, “Veronika Tennis” didn’t make me a star. But it was an experience. Maybe next week I’ll try to learn how to bake bread like that guy on YouTube. We’ll see how that goes.
