I figured I’d create some kind of digital collage, maybe something that changed a bit over time, using images and moods I’d collected.
Getting Started: The Optimistic Phase
I first sat down and thought, “How hard can this be?” Famous last words, right? I planned to grab a bunch of photos, maybe some short video clips, and stitch them together. I wasn’t aiming for some high-tech AI thing, just something honest. I even thought about pulling in live data, like local news headlines or weather, to make it feel current. My head was full of these cool ideas.
My toolkit was pretty basic. I looked at some open-source gallery scripts, maybe a bit of simple Javascript to handle transitions or refresh content. I thought, “I’ll just find some great images, write a few lines of code, and boom – ‘Face of LA’.” I even cleared out a folder on my hard drive, all ready to be filled with LA goodness.
The Reality Bites: Gathering the “Faces”

I got something basic working, like a slideshow with some random ordering, but it wasn’t the living, breathing thing I had in my mind. It felt more like a slightly fancier screensaver.

Scaling Back and What I Ended Up With

So, I scaled it way, way back. I decided to focus on a much smaller, curated set of images. Images that resonated with me personally, even if they weren’t the “definitive” LA. I picked about 50 photos – some of mine, some I found that I really liked – that showed different textures and moods of the city, from gritty downtown alleys to quiet suburban corners, sun-drenched beaches to neon-lit nights.
What I finally “implemented” was a simple, clean web page. It just displayed these images in a slow, fading slideshow. No fancy AI, no live data, no complex interactions. Just the pictures, allowed to speak for themselves. I used a very straightforward Javascript library for the slideshow effect because, at that point, I just wanted something done.
It wasn’t the groundbreaking project I’d initially dreamed of. Not by a long shot. But you know what? It was something. It was my attempt. And looking at it, it did capture a certain feeling, a personal slice of what LA means to me.
What I Learned from This Whole Thing
This whole “Face of LA” adventure taught me a few things. First, LA is incredibly hard to pin down. It’s too vast, too diverse. Trying to capture its “face” is like trying to catch smoke. Maybe that’s the point of LA, actually.
Second, sometimes your big ideas need a reality check. It’s easy to dream up complex projects, but actually building them, even simple versions, takes real effort and often means making compromises. I had to learn to be okay with “good enough” instead of “perfect.”
And lastly, even when a project doesn’t turn out how you initially envisioned, the process itself is valuable. I brushed up on some old skills, learned about my own limits, and ended up with a little digital thing that I actually quite like. It’s a personal memento of my attempt to understand a city that, frankly, defies easy understanding. And that’s okay. It’s still my little “face of la.”
