Yesterday, I saw a poor horse with a broken leg. It reminded me of an interesting thing I did a few years ago. I tried to make a fake leg for a horse! You know what? It worked pretty well.

At first, I found some information online, it looks like the horse should stand up right after the surgery and then start walking with a custom leg. So, I figured the first thing is to make a fake leg.
I remembered there was a horse named Shine. He was a cool little guy. They said he got a second chance at life because of a fake leg. I thought maybe I could do the same for another horse.
So I got to work. I used some strong stuff like titanium, graphite, and fiberglass to make the leg. I knew it had to be super sturdy because, you know, horses are heavy!
- First, I measured the horse’s other leg to get the right size.
- Then, I shaped the materials to look like a real horse leg.
- Next, I made a socket that would fit the horse’s stump.
It was hard work, to be honest. I had to make sure the fake leg was strong enough to carry the horse’s weight. These creatures are big and their legs are usually skinny. If they break a leg, it’s very hard for them to live on because the limb can not hold the whole body weight. And those poor animals have to suffer a lot. Even worse, there will be a high chance of infection which could be very dangerous. I also tried to make it comfortable, so the horse wouldn’t be in too much pain.
After I finished making the leg, I attached it to the horse’s stump. The vet helped me with that part. It was amazing to see the horse stand up on the new leg! Of course, it took some time for the horse to get used to it. They need some time to learn how to walk with a new leg.

But soon, the horse was walking around, and it seemed so happy! It was like giving the horse a new life. I was really proud of myself.
Making that fake leg was one of the most rewarding things I’ve ever done. It’s amazing what you can do when you put your mind to it. Plus, helping an animal in need is always a good feeling. I heard there was a horse named Molly, and she had to amputate her leg after being attacked by a dog after Katrina. But she became a therapy pony, how inspirational! Maybe one day, I will make another fake leg for other animals.
