My Little Investigation into Ewan McGregor’s Hair Color

So, I was watching some old movies the other weekend, ended up on a bit of an Ewan McGregor kick. Watched Trainspotting, then Moulin Rouge!, and then bits of the Star Wars prequels. And it hit me – his hair color seems all over the place!

It got me curious. Like, really curious. What’s his actual hair color? You see him as Obi-Wan, and it’s this kind of light brownish, reddish color, right? Especially in the newer series. But then I remembered him in other films, and it just didn’t seem consistent.

So, I did what anyone with too much time on a Sunday does: I started looking it up. Not like a serious research project, you know, just poking around online, looking at photos from different times.

Digging Through Photos and Roles

First, I went way back. Pictures from his younger days, before the massive fame. Then I specifically looked for stuff around the time of Trainspotting – that hair was dark and super short, hard to tell much there.

Then came the Obi-Wan era. Across the prequels, it’s pretty consistently that light brown/auburn shade. Sometimes it looked lighter, sometimes a bit darker, maybe depending on the lighting or the specific movie. The beard often matched.

But then I looked at things like:

  • Moulin Rouge! – Definitely looked like a darker brown there.
  • Big Fish – He had lighter, almost blondish hair at points in that one, if I remember right.
  • Recent photos/interviews – Nowadays, it looks like his natural color, but definitely with some grey mixed in, as happens to us all!

After scrolling through a bunch of pictures and clips, reading bits here and there on fan pages or old interviews people mentioned, I started to piece it together.

What I Figured Out

It seems like his natural hair color is generally considered a reddish-brown or auburn. That seems to be the baseline.

But man, he’s definitely not afraid to change it for a role. He’s gone darker, lighter, and probably every shade in between depending on what the part needed. It makes sense, actors do that all the time.

So, the simple answer to my own question? His natural color is likely that auburn/reddish-brown we often see, but what you see on screen could be anything! It was just a little mystery I decided to solve for myself. Kinda interesting seeing how much it changed over the years for different characters.
